Leaving Laos we were both a little sad knowing we only had a few short days of our amaizing journey left. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur early afternoon and having passed through before had a fair idea of what we wanted to do with our short time there. Now Kuala Lumpur is a bustling city and has plenty to offer especially regarding the markets (Leah's dream, truth be told), so knowing we would be there for less than 24 hours we prioritised and booked our bus tickets back into Singapore, an easy task and leaving us more than enough time to peruse the delights of China towns market. The market at first glance is like anything at home. Stalls line the outer walkway leaving you free to meander at your leisure, however this is not what happens. The market asaults the senses, the smells of food inscense and perfume, then the colours, the smog then the heat (well its just hot) it makes you think twice about wandering around! But this isn't what puts you off because after your senses suffer a hit you have to navigate and plot a course that avoids most stall holders dragging you to buy from their stall. It is fun, but after a while you dare not to look anyone in the eye because you know if you do your going to be at least 10 ringit down! After an hour or two, we decided our stomachs had gotten the better of us, so laden with a few gifts we made our way out of the market to get some food. As I've said before K.L. is a bustling city; and in any city your going to find the usual city animals. But in this city they have PIGEONS with the aim of a sniper - yes folks while we walked to get some food happy with our purchases and pleased to be nearer to filling our bellies a pigeon saw me coming, lined up his aim and BANG right in the middle of my forhead. Apparently its lucky but I think people say that with the thought of "its lucky - it wasnt me!" Obviously I was a little miffed but Lee made me see the funny side and helped me clear my head Ha Ha Ha. Kuala Lumper gave us a memory to leave with, but it was nothing compared to Singapore and the awesome final farewel awaiting us.
Travelling from KL to Singapore takes around six hours and as our last bus ride it went well, we passed throught the boarder easy enough and made our way in to central Singapore for about 4 in the afternoon. We had booked the final two nights in the same hostel we had stayed in before - familiarity and comfort and all that! Getting there was nice alhtough we knew the faces would be different when we arrived. Funny enough though the hostel gaves us both our same beds as our prevous stay, so we dropped our bags off and made for the nearest restaurant to get an early dinner. Because we'd travelled and the two of us were pretty knackered we stayed at the front of the hostel for the evening having a few cans chatting about travels and the prospect of going home. We had been chatting away for a couple of hours when Fintan came back to the hostel from being out for the evening (We had met Fintan the previous time in Singapore and thought he was on his travels again), so the three of us sat and drank for a while swapping stories of our travels. The time passed quickly and before we knew it was about 12 at night and we were being joined by some locals who had been partying at the restaurant next door. We met James and Brenda, Singapoian's who would end up being the perfect hosts to our final night. The three of us along with the locals were then joined by an 8 strong group of Polish who were also up for a night of merryment. Needless to say the beer flowed and the vodka followed. Our night turned into day, with most of us getting to bed about 6.30am the following morning (Fintan actually slept on the bench at the front of the hostel, but the weather is suitable for an occasional outdoor siesta its just the pickpockets you have to worry about!). One of the guys we met got so stinky drunk he fell asleep on the path outside the shop next to the hostel, he woke up the next morning minus a wallet and his dads watch (eck!)
I would love to say that our last full day was jam packed with sightseeing and taking in the full delights of Singapore but in reality the heat, mixed with a slight... ok huge hangover kept our exploration radius to a minimum. We did venture out of course, but made resolute that the following day would be our day to get those final bits done, besides we had drunkenly arranged with James and Brenda that we would meet them the following day and let them show us where to get the best food in Singapore. Around 7ish Lee myself and Fintan were picked up by by the lads and were taken to an amaizing food court where James and Brenda organised a banquette good enough for royalty, it was brilliant. We were joined by a couple of their friends in the begining and later by a few more. We ate some amazing dishes and drank a good amout of beer to match, we chatted and laughed and had one of the best nights of our travels. The owner of one of the stalls Uncle Michael provided more vodka and beer, seemily he doesnt really talk to new people hes normally very quiet but we got on really well and it wasnt long before we were swopping all kinds of stories. The large group that had formed sat toghether until around 4am. It was our last night travelling, the last night of our adventures, and what a night it was!!!!!! It summed up our experience throughout the six months, and tought me never to underestimate the kindness of strangers. We spent our last night in the company of new friends, it was a fitting end to a six months of magical adventures.
Even though it was very late (or early depending on your view) when we finally made it to bed we kept to our resolute decision and dragged ourselves out of slumber early enough to see a bit more of Singapore. We ventured to China town and spent our last hours seeing the markets and temples around the area, even on our last day we still got to tick a few firsts off our list. We sat in on a buddist mass and finally got to drink from a coconut! We also managed to get a small bit of souvenir shopping done before we finally made our way to the airport and our final plane journey of this trip.
We couldn't believe that our journey had come to an end,we had been worried our last few days might be a little flat but honestly they couldnt have been any better. Meeting up with some recently made friends and making new ones right up to the last few hours.
