Today without fail was the longest day in my 23 year history. Eventually after 3 buses and boat and a taxi and a lot of hours I was finally in Koh Phangan!!
So the night before I had enquired about a price from Phuket to Koh Phangan. In true Thai fashion, they saw a westerner and made a price up on the spot. So I politely smiled, as my mother always told me to, and said I'd get back to them!
The hostel I was staying in offered me the same time bus and boat for 400 baht less so the answer was obvious. I booked for 10:30 until 17:30.. What's this, pick up is at 7. sighhh. Okay, well still I'm on a bus so it's fine.
After taking the bus for an hour, he stops and tells me I am going on another bus that was picking me up from here! The bus turns up and I get on this other bus which is far from hygienic, comfy or probably even safe. Hey, I'm a backpacker, should probably just embrace this right?! So after 5 hours, a Thai man asking if he could add me on Facebook and various other drop offs, the bus stops and the driver tells us 'all out, all out'. Erm what now? There is no boat or full moon in sight and it definitely isn't half past 5. So I get out, pick up the rucksack and there is another man telling us to wait for an hour for another bus. Is someone playing a sick game? Thai public transport is s***. There is just no other way to describe it! If you get public buses or boats, don't ever expect to get picked up on time, get there on time or be in any comfort!
Anyway, made some friends, always handy when you have a long wait! There was a Canadian girl and an Australia lad. So the rest of the journey became a bit more bearable!
We were waiting for the transfer boat and then finally got told to make out way down. The boat looked so nice! Wait, we are walking past that.. Oh, it's the boat that's been squashed into a long sausage shape, well that's fine! Seriously, not that one, it's that miniature one hidden by the wall where it is so small! That is going to take me in a 2 and a half hour journey to the island?! Brilliant.
When I finally arrived only 12 hours later, the girls happened to walk into the reception as I was checking in! They were so excited to see me and after the day I had had I was pretty happy to see them as well! They showed me the dorms and my bunk and then we had dinner, went to a voodoo party and drunk a bucket of gin each. It was definitely needed after today but it just means tomorrow could start worse than today has been..
