All aboard the worlds smallest plane... we're off to the Amazon! The flight there was an adventure in itself with pretty bad turbulence & I couldn't believe it when I looked out of the window to find a mountain on one side & a glacier on the other, but what do you expect when you take off at nearly 5000mts above sea level. To our delight the plane landed safely - on a grass runway!!
After leaving Rurrenabaque a gorgeous jungle village, the tour started with a 3hr motorised canoe ride down the river. We saw lots of wildlife; Alligators, Turtles, Capybaras, Toucans, Watsons to name a few but the best bit were the Squirrel Monkeys. The cheeky little bleeders came down & snatched the bananas right out of your hands. After dropping our bags off & putting down our mozzy nets at our jungle huts we headed out for a beer at the Sunset Bar. On the way back we went night croc spotting. I tell ya its pretty scary being only a couple of feet away from those beedy eye's knowing there is only a bit of wood separating them & us.
The next morning we woke up to a tropical monsoon, so kitted up in wellies & waterproof's we headed off Anaconda hunting, but the rain & mist added all the more to the experience. I wasn't loving trekking through the swampland, as every step I took I got my welly stuck (full of water), but once we hit solid ground again the hunt was on. After a couple of hours we hit Alligator lake, and I'm not kidding there was well over a 100 beedy eyes and snouts popping out of the water that seemed to be following our every move… pretty scary!! Eventually we found a 3m Anaconda, but it wasn't quite as impressive as that in the J-Lo movie.
Later that day we went Piranha fishing… armed with plenty of bloody meat on hooks. The little b*****s must be getting wise as they casually took all the meat & only one managed to get itself caught, by Clare (Easton's still a bit sore that as the only guy on the boat it wasn't him). Swimming with Pink Dolphins was also on the itinerary but it was more like you jump in & they swim away, which wasn't too bad as I didn't want to spend long in that murky water when you never know what is lurking below.
The 3hr 4x4 trip back to Rurrenabaque was pretty painful in 35 degree heat (they haven't quite heard of air-con yet in South America), covered from head to toe with itching mozzy bites, cramped up in a jeep with 8 people who have been the great unwashed for 3days… but hey that's Amazon life & a hot shower never felt so good!!
