So after less than 24 hours in LA, we are back on a plane and heading for Cancun, Mexico.
Just for reference sake this flight was just under 5 hours, and the passengers (mainly Americans) were not the smartest people I have ever met - the flight attendant nearly had to knock one of them out for standing as the plane was taking off - it was actually kind of scary!!
We land in Cancun and catch a "collectiveo" from the airport to our accommodation - Hostel Quetzal. A collectivo is a shared taxi, helping each passenger save some $$.
We drive past a mini version of what can only be described as Disneyland on Drugs. We drop 3 sets of people off before our stop, all at these amazing high rise resorts, with breathtaking views and landscaping and then it is on to the last stop which is ours.
I believe the look on my face would have been pretty amusing, but Matt just kept quiet whilst we drove through some pretty dodgy areas to pull up outside our Hostel, which has a burnt out car within 100 metres of the entry. As Matt said "not a photo you would send your Nanna of how safe we are!"
As you may or may not know this was my first stay ever at a true hostel / backpackers - working in travel and hospitality for 11 years there is never any need to "downgrade"!!
Cutting a long story short after "settling in" I honestly could not complain about anything, the service was great, the room was simple but pretty clean, but the best bit was the communal dinner where all guests get together and share stories, advice, free tequilla shots and a few beers!
We get up nice and early, and go for a wander around before jumping on a bus down the coast to Tulum.
Again we get dropped off in a pretty nasty looking piece of town, but again to my surprise its unreal!! The Secret Garden Hostel is awesome - it is spacious, and really clean, and the bed is great (thank god!)!
We drop our stuff and head towards the beach - we stop at a wicked little bar / restaurant and kick back and chill for a couple of hours. Enjoy the ridiculous heat (so hot!), $2 Coronas, some corn chips and chilli, and some tacos - very Mexican, very awesome!!
We both agree that we could get used to this life, cheers ourseleves and the next 7 months, have a giggle at each other and just take it all in!!
The adventure has now truly begun and we both of us coud not be happier - this is what life is about!!
Peace xx
