So we have been travelling for exactly 1 week and already the stories are mounting... The photo night will be out of control when we get back if it keeps going this way!
In our last post we had arrived in Tulum, Mexico where we ended up staying for 3 nights and both of us fell in love with the place. I must admit, to start with I was a little frustrated that there seemed to be nothing going on, until I realised that was the attraction, there quite honestly was nothing happening!
So for 3 days we kicked back, wandered around at our own pace and made our first "travel buddies".
On day 2 we visited the Tulum Ruins which are right on the cliff coast of the Carribean. Those Mayans were definitely on to something - you know what they say location, location, location, and boy oh boy did these guys have a view to die for! The ruins were intriguing and I am know pretty keen to dive into the Mayan history books, and work out why the calender ends next year - at this point Matt and I have decided the world isn't ending they just got bored of chipping away
We ended up on our last day down at the beach, taking in the breath taking views of the Carribean, getting seriously sunburnt, and meeting our new buddies - Ruth from Glasgow and Luke from NZ! We shared margharitas for a few hours, swam and realised that for the next 6 months we are going on the same journey - so it looks like we have made some lifelong friends already!
On Saturday we met Ruth and Luke at the bus station and we all headed to the boarder of Mexico, Chetumal to cross over into Belize.
Now I did say after the event "well that will make for a good blog entry", but at the time it was all a little stressful - no one could speak english and our taxi driver took us over the boarder, not passing immigration and not aknowledging the young men with ridiculously large weapons!! We were then stuck (for maybe 5 mins) but still stuck in what was no mans land - we weren't in Mexico and we weren't in Belize!! Our white complexions, backpacks and a couple of sorry's saw us back where we needed to be and all sorted!!
It was then a 3 hour jet boat ride and we ended up in the very rustafarian town of San Pedro and then onto Caye Caulker! I would dub this place litttle Jamaica - Bob Marley eat your heart out!
Ruth and I bought our very first souvenirs, walked around drinking Belezian Beer (which for the record is just bloody awful), and waited 2 hours for dinner - it seems they do it in slow motion here!
We are staying in a cute little guest house with very own jetty, with hammocks tied at the end so we can stare out at the ocean and soak up the heat and drink well, more beer...
Think we might just stay a few nights!
Peace xx
P.S. "Lessons so Far..."
1) If you have to carry your life on your back, don't get your back ridiculously sunburnt, it only causes pain!
2) If you don't think the taxi man understood you, he probably didn't!!
3) Stop writing lists and relax!!
