Wake up at 3 AM, I take bags down the 90 steps, the rabbit Emma takes extra time as Juniper has to do more cleaning. By the time we get to bus stop, it is 4:07 and train leaves at 4:27. Amazingly, there is a cab right beside us, Juniper hails it, load up and off we rush. Find the right platform, #1, at 4:25 and board the ICE train bound for Munich. Snow on the ground abounds all the way to Nuremberg and Munich. Watch the sunrise. Make a train change in Munich, grab a sandwich, onward. But first, we get on wrong car as Juniper says there are no reserved seats on this leg, she was wrong. And with all our luggage and all the people, it is rough moving, so we wait at end of car for all to settle and then make our way to proper seating. We actually have a compartment for 6, two guys in there already. One is Ukrainian, other never discovered. Again luggage is a problem, but empty seat rescues us. We see that someone will be boarding in Innsbruck for that seat, so we rearrange luggage. Now we see real snow-capped Alps, on both side of us, breathtaking.
Family of 3 gets on in Innsbruck, the woman barges in, takes over the space, the 2 guys are out and in moves the family. Lady immediately closes window shade so she can read, blocking clear view for all others. Light snow begins falling in Austria, Italy brings sunnier skies. Vineyards to the left and right, workers are in the fields using lifts to fix irrigation or pruning vines. The vines are much taller, older than the ones in US, obviously, but there are plenty of younger vines, looks like that industry is growing.
Get to Genoa, switch trains, this time Bren and I at one end of car, Joon at other end. Wheels on my suitcase are losing outer surface and starting to not spin, so rubbing a flat edge, will break off rest to be using the inner wheel surface. Luggage racks above seat are not tall enough to hold two pieces. Make it to destination a little late, first time by the way, hail a cab since we don't have a clue where to go. Not a bad cab ride, 20 euro to the 'campground'. Check in, have dinned at restaurant, or rather the lounge. So we ate to flashing lights, pounding music, kids in togas drinking. Like an Italian disco with bad dancing in with toga, toga togas all around.
