The length of our stay in Toronto was heavily reliant on the efficiency of the Ontario Health Care system which is why we went from a plan of 3 months to a reality of 6 months. In that time my slightly broken DH had multiple root canal and crazy-glue procedures on her teeth, rehabilitated a sciatica, had a steroid injection in her hip to provide pain relief for a torn groin meniscus, and underwent knee surgery for a different torn meniscus. All of this included many physiotherapy sessions, copious massages, endless visits to chiropractors, countless ice packs, a little bit of acupuncture, and the somewhat questionable use of a laser stun gun. But given the magic of modern medicine and her own perseverance, DH has been cleared for travel although one small duffle bag has been reserved for pain pills. And despite dropping good coin on the higher end Jeep Grand Cherokee with plush leather seats, DH has found a hard plastic scoop that she needs to sit in for the longer driving days.
Our travel for this leg of the journey is going to be a little different. We were getting a little tired of the current hassles associated with air travel, as well as the challenging currencies, languages, customs, and rules of each new country. So we're taking to the road with some aimless driving through the U.S. and Canada. We get the odd raised eyebrow when we talk about heading into the land of Donald Trump but having elected, in short order, a crack smoking mayor, a professional school trustee as Premier, and a drama school teacher as Prime Minister (with the crack addicted dude being the most financially responsible), we have no high ground to stand on (and tracking the increasingly outlandish statements from Trump has a peculiar entertainment value). But somewhat surprisingly, more people seemed to envy this journey than the more global wandering we’ve been doing up to this point.
Where to start?? We’ve always had to pack within the constraints of one backpack and one carry-on bag each so getting ready for this trip should have been a breeze but not so. Apparently it is possible to stuff 10lbs into a 5lb sack. But when the 10lbs is all the stuff we could think of using on our road trip (including clothing and shoes for all seasons, hiking gear, golf clubs, scuba gear, bicycles, sporting goods of all types, a small library, a blender and juicer, coolers, automotive supplies, etc), and the 5lb sack is Thunder, our newly purchased road trip SUV, the end result is a claustrophobic experience that just wasn't going to work. So the first stop on our don’t-look-back road trip was our storage locker just north of Toronto where we shed some of our less important inventory (my stuff) and reorganized our more critical inventory (her stuff). Now that there was room for The Princess, I drove back to Toronto to pick her up and fortunately she hadn't wandered far from where I left her.
We're off!!

lancesimmens well I trust you will be heading this way. I live in Malibu, have a new serious sweetheart, live on the beach, don't have much room but we can improvise. Hope to see you soon. Lance
Tina OUCH! Though I have to say (with 30+ years in health care) that only DH could rock the hospital gown attire. Even Katniss needs a tune-up. Hope all is well now.
carolcooke You are looking a little tentative...no sure are you?!
carolcooke Just think how much money you could have made on the road!
carolcooke Again you are not looking impressed! Bet the food was good though, we always found the best places while working!
carolcooke Don't do it DH!!! Think of all the pain during those root canals!
martin1027 The other Big Apple. Not the one aka Manhattan. I love this place. Great pie, and very kitchy. Look forward to seeing posts of more of these one-offs. Route 66 is filled with them (The Wigwam Motel comes to mind!) Travel safe!!
carolcooke You look guilty...like you have packed something that DH might have wanted on your trip! And you are saying..."Don't tell her its not if the SUV"
carolcooke Thanks for the memories of TO! Loved the photos...have a great trip and I look forward to many more entries to this next adventure you two are on! Don't forget there is always a bed in the Land Down Under if you decide that you are happy to deal with foreign currency and flights again!
carolcooke I'm sure DH is really happy with this photo! But she does rock the hospital gown!
Kevin & Art (Havana) Sheeeesh! Another journey ahead for the Toronto Dynamic Duo! Will check in and see if your journies bring you to Minnesota! I assume you are going to try to travel the southern states during winter or are you going to tough it in the frozen tundra??
