We headed to Little Rock, Arkansas largely because the various storm systems, tornados, and flood warnings didn't give us too many options. But when we found out that the Government of Arkansas is the only state in the Union that is legally mandated to show the contents of the State Safe to anyone who demands it, we pointed Billy Thunder in the direction of Bill Clinton’s former home.
And speaking of corrupt, Arkansas has a turbulent history of corrupt politicians and officials, and as a result the state constitution, written in part just after the Civil War, specifies that all tax money must be kept in the vault at the Treasurer's Office. Any time that a citizen wants to verify that the tax money is still there and hasn't been stolen, they can stop by and ask to see it. And since Arkansas actually runs a surplus, it goes without saying that this tour would be far more exciting than a walk through any Canadian government safe that would likely only contain a depressingly large stack of dusty IOU’s in a corner.
Now apparently Arkansas didn’t get the Homeland Security memo about not trusting anyone, at any time, under any circumstances, so despite the fact that we are homeless wanderers living out of our car we were cheerfully invited into their safe in order to root around and hold as much money as we wanted (keep in mind that this is USD currency and not the rapidly plunging monopoly money we use). They also didn’t seem too concerned that the Princess left the building with a new set of Kardashian-like buttocks that I had never noticed before.
On behalf of Lance S, who worships daily at a small Bill Clinton shrine he has built in his California condo, we did track down the requisite Bill Clinton Presidential Library but it was closed in order to complete an email cleanse of the on-site servers. Something about a pending FBI visit??
We also stopped at Fort Smith which, in its day, represented the extent of "civilized" society. Beyond the fort were the Indian territories that marked the end of The Trail of Tears for those Indian tribes that had been forcibly relocated from the eastern states. Even the promised self-governance in these territories didn’t last long and a duplicitous Andrew Jackson soon opened these lands up to white settlers. It was the lawless wild, wild, west that has been portrayed in many Hollywood cowboy movies.
