See the World; Come Home for Love
So far Santiago is crazy but cool. It seems like a mix of Miami, Lima, New York, and New Orleans- if you can imagine that. We are staying in the Bohemian nightlife district- the streets are all lined with outdoor cafes piled with people enjoying boisterous conversation, greasy food, and cheap wine/beer/pisco sours. Chile is strange because everything feels so familiar, and yet off. Plus, it´s really hard to understand people! They seem to understand us though, which is nice.
We went to a place recommended in our guidebook for typical Chilean food right near our hostel. It had a hole-in-the-wall with a history sort of feel, and we shared a giant plate of Chorrillana, which was big juicy chunks of steak, chorizo, onions, and a fried egg on top of french fries. It was like a strange mixture of Peruvian salchipapas and lomo saltado, only with better beef. We also tried the notorious Chilean pisco sours. I could really taste the pisco and didn´t really like it- too grapey. Also it was too lemony and not chilled enough and with no eggwhite. I definitely pefer the Peruvian variety. However, I´ll give it another try to make sure it wasn´t just the restaurant.
