Decided on a guided trip to Fraser Island rather than a self-drive tour as I didn't trust someone who'd never driven 4WD drive before! Plus the guided tour was a 'camping safari' which meant we got permanent tents with proper beds and someone to cook our lunches and dinner! The tents were absolutely fab, they had raised wooden floorboards, lovely comfy beds, a rack for drying your towel, fresh linen! Now that's my idea of camping.
The 2 day trip included all the highlights of Fraser Island including the Maheno Shipwreck which everyone who has been to Oz always has a photo of! We climbed Indian Head and looking down into the sea we saw some reef sharks. You can't swim in the ocean at Fraser Island as it has really strong rips and a healthy population of sharks waiting for you.
The drive in our huge 4WD bus was an adventure, bouncing along the sand and weaving in and out of the incoming waves which occasionally crashed up the side of the bus. There are no roads on the island, just sand tracks, and the main highway on the eastern side is the beach. We spent a bit too long at Champagne Pools and as we headed back the tide was coming in and the beach was a narrow strip between the dunes and ocean. As it grew darker the waves seemed to be coming in so close to the bus, it was a relief when we made it to our campsite.
