We had a sleepy start to the day, didn't get out of bed until 845. We got ready to go and packed up our bags which the hotel was kind enough to store for us while we toured around the town. Breakfast consisted of some pastries and coffee by the marketplace and after we ate we wandered around the market admiring all the fresh food that we couldn't buy. Dan drooled over the meats and I wanted to try every cheese possible. We finally settled on buying a little basket of strawberries and a takeaway container of paella that was cooked in a massive wok on site. The strawberries were so sweet and juicy, unlike any back home.
After the market we walked to the church of st maclou, one the three I wanted to see. This one was fairly small so Dan waited outside while I went in. After I was done it felt like time for lunch so we found one of the VERY few places open on a Sunday and had ham and cheese baguettes and coffee.
The abbey I wanted to see closed from 12 to 2 so we walked around the adorable medieval streets that have been turned into pedestrian walkways and as we were walking around the rain finally caught up. We had to duck into a storefront to get out of the rain (we couldn't actually go into any stores as they were all closed) few minutes later it stopped and we were able to continue our walk. We decided to sit in another cafe and have some cider this time, a little more carbonated than the one from last night but just as good. I left Dan sitting there drinking cider and doing the crossword while I ventured to the cathedral.
45 minutes later I was done and went back to the cafe to get dan so we could go see the abbey of st. Ouen! I dragged him along to this one and it was totally worth it, it had some original frescoes in the chapels and all the stained glass windows were original from the 14th century.
By this time we had pretty much seen all that we wanted to see so we went back to the hotel to grab our bags and took a cab to the train station hoping to catch an earlier train out. No luck, the only option would have gotten us there only 45min earlier and we would've had to pay an extra 20 euro each. So we settled down in a corner of the station to wait for our train at 615 pm.
Finally the train arrived and we found more comfortable seats for the two hour train ride to Arras. Once we arrived we decided to walk since it did not look like the hotel was far away. It was. Half an hour later we arrived and were shown to a room with two single beds..... We were staying in the catholic diocese rooms. We just pushed the beds together but I'm pretty sure we both ended up on just one.
Tomorrow: Vimy ridge memorial!
