The crossing was incredibly rough and many of the group found it extremely difficult particularly those who had recently suffered illness.
With great relief all round we arrived at Dar es Salaam port to be reunited with Piet and the truck. A slow drive fighting traffic followed before we stopped at a rather out of place but highly welcome modern mall complex where we were given 5000Tsh each (around £2) for lunch. We had an hour to buy some lunch and get other provisions before we clambered back in the truck and continued on our journey.
During the next section of the drive we got pulled over by the local police unexpectedly and Piet had to pay a fine/bribe for supposedly speeding. Talking to him afterwards he was not only adamant that he'd done nothing wrong but was also philosophical and experienced accepting that there was not a lot he could do this being Africa. You read about and hear about these sorts of things happening, but it was all very bizarre and shocking when it happened.
We had a brief stop at Chilinze before finally breaking new ground and heading for Ruaha River camp. The journey from Chilinze took some 6 hours more and with the last 50km being national park we were fortunate to spot as we were driving baboons, giraffes, elephants, impalas and buffalo all living in the vicinity of the road.
After the normal rigmarole of setting up camp, dinner was cooked by Kirsty and her group (chicken and pasta) and ate around a camp fire.
Breakfasting at 7 we were on our way at 7.30 to Iringa.
