Throughout the wedding period it was only right to enjoy a bit of down time too!
I'll begin with my favourite experiences...
A last minute, intimate hen party was organised for the bride by her friends and close family. It was held in a gorgeous 4* apartment called Lanson Place in Changkat, overlooking the twin towers. The view was beautiful, especially at night when the towers were lit.
I was totally in love with the bathroom. My first hot shower since I left the UK.
I can't really go into detail about the night itself but let's just say I've been to approximately 10 hen dos across Europe, however this was a unique experience by far!!
A large group of us went to the Helipad which is a helicopter pad recently converted into a roof top bar overlooking the twin towers. Despite it being a high rise building the level of security is seriously worrying. All the roof top bars I've visited have a glass window around the edge. This bar just had a security tape. Scary but all part of the fun I guess.
The sunset from here is magnificent, so I've been told. We were 10 minutes late so missed the sunset. Oh well I've got plenty more opportunities to see the sunset in various other backdrops.
Shopping at Petaling Street is always an experience. Preparation before leaving for Petaling St is vital:
1. Do not carry too much cash - not sure what too much is, especially if my aim is to buy lots of "designer" bags and sunglasses.
2. Carry a small bag, it should have a zip and be inaccessible to others!
3. Do not carry any valuables
4. Get your bargaining hat on!
Petaling St is a bustling, shoulder rubbing, open air night market where you can find all sorts of cheap "designer" items ranging from purses to sunglasses. You can even buy Dr Dre Beat headphones for £20! Wow! Outstanding price but the sound quality is questionable.
Despite following all the pointers (listed above) I was still constantly paranoid about being pick pocketed so walked through the market tightly gripping on to my sling bag, which is when I realised I was wearing the most valuable item I own on my finger. Oops, forgot to take my engagement ring off.
So here's the thing.. The price of a single item can range widely depending on how close it looks to the genuine equivalent. So for example we take the Michael Kors handbag - the market is flooded with all sorts - different sizes, colours and even shapes but if you look closely at the stitching or the logo you will notice the difference between a fake fake or a genuine fake. Mind boggling indeed, that's probably why my mum asked me to find her a bag.
So a few hours later we came home safely with a Mulberry clutch and a Michael Kors hand bag. All in all a successful shopping trip for my mum.
The one and only disappointment across Malaysia is the poor quality of customer service, which Ro and I experienced on many occasions.
Nandos - the staff were miserable. No chicken happy chicas in sight. They got my order wrong and didn't seem to care. What's worse is that the trainee was full of attitude and she just started working there!
The day before the first event my cousin booked the eight of us in for a mani pedi bridal party. We were all really excited, finally a chance for us to put our feet up and enjoy a pampering session. Not quite!
Long story cut short we arrived at the place to find that they decided to cancel our booking without notifying us because we hadn't paid a deposit and quite frankly they couldn't care less.
Ro was served cold pork at a food court which resulted in an argument with a member of staff who refused to switch it with a hot dish. The fact that Ro doesn't speak Malay and the lady doesn't speak English was a big stumbling block. With a little help from my Malaysian cousin Ro got his way in the end but I'd finished eating by then.
On the topic of customer service, I am really not impressed with the no refund policy across Malaysia. A lot of women from the UK would breakdown at the thought of not being able to return a piece of clothing once purchased.
Despite this Malaysia has a lot to offer.. Lots of beautiful greenery, the twin towers, great food at an extremely reasonable price, many bars and social hang outs, Tom, d*** and Harry at The Pavilion being our favourite. A small quirky but yet simple bar that plays live music. The music and atmosphere was so good it had some of us dancing on the table tops and stools.
