Day one in Baños was great. We showed up and got checked in to the hostel and went to lunch. A few volunteers that came to Baños previously suggested we try "Canyoning". Canyoning is waterfall repelling and is as awesome as it sounds! The deal was $20 for 5 waterfalls, transportation, safety equipment, and a disc of videos/pics of the trip. Sounded good to us!! Once we got dropped off at the spot, it was a STEEP hike up the mountain to get to the waterfalls. They don't mention that part when you sign up lol. We reached the first waterfall as we all gasped for air in this high altitude location. Right away I was ready to go! I wasn't nervous at all, which was surprising cause I'm afraid of heights. The first waterfall was maybe 20 ft and a good practice run for all of us. But, as we moved on, the waterfalls became tougher and bigger. The only downside to the repelling was our group size. We have 7 in our group and then there were 10 other people, too. So, somehow I ended up going down each waterfall 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, so it was a loooong cold wait at the bottom for the rest of the gang. By the 3rd waterfall, I was kind of over it. I wasn't scared to keep going, but I was just freezing and felt that I experienced enough with the first three. WRONG! The 4th one happened to be my absolute favorite. It was about a 60 foot waterfall! I went 4th this time and I saw the first three people's faces as they looked over the edge, so I decided not to even look down. I had achieved a joking relationship with the tour guide, so when it was my turn, we cracked a few jokes and he hooked me in and I just stepped on back. The coolest part about this repel was that you were walking down rocks that didn't have strong running water. So the waterfall was to your right and all you had to do was move your feet. The other three were different because you were walking down actually in the water. At the bottom of the second one, I slipped and ended up getting submerged under the waterfall for a second. It was funny lol. By the time we got to the final waterfall (which was really just more of a waterslide), it was 6:30 and dark. And as it got darker it got colder. However, as cold as I was, I looked up towards the trees and saw a bunch of lightning bugs. They were the tiny lights at the end of the tunnel! I enjoyed the repelling so much and am very happy we did it.
