Surfing USA!
My journey down the west coast of California continued as I reached Santa Cruz.
Once again I met a bunch of great people which is unbelievable given the hostel had an 11pm curfew and alcohol wasn't permitted. We actually broke both rules as we rolled in at 2pm and then cracked some cans open!
Once the group resurfaced yesterday we arranged a days surfing. My bad luck in terms of waves continued as they were few n far between. However with a longer board I did manage to stand up for a lengthier period.
We surfed on Pleasure Point Beach which is down the road from where mr O'Neil grew up. He apparently designed the first ever wet suit and his brand is well known throughout the world.
After the surf we went to grab a super sized burrito from Taco Del Rey to cure the post surf munchies.
Then it was time to move on again as I made the short journey to Monterey. The aim was to go down to Santa Barbara however travelling at 7pm is unwise when I plan to head down the great sur (route 1).
This was probably the best decision I've ever made. I've just arrived in Santa Barbara and I've taken by far the most scenic route in America so far. Anyone who has done it will know what I mean. It would have been a complete waste to do it in the darkness. My advice is do it north to south if you can as pulling over at random places is much easier.
It bought back memories of the great ocean road that Jimmy took me on in Melbourne. I continually stopped to take pictures and I've never enjoyed a drive as much.
Now its time to see what nightlife Santa Barbara has to offer before hopefully sneaking in one more surf tomorrow. I think I've got the surf bug so I better get my fill as New York certainly can't satisfy that need!
