Stu & Amy See The World!
Saturday 26th November
Had another early morning to catch the train to Ayutthaya (the old capital of Siam). Decided to got for 2nd class seats (as opposed to 3rd class) and were pleasantly surprised by the decent leg room and air conditioning. After very many stops on the outskirts of Bangkok we finally got moving and arrived in Ayuthaya an hour and a half later. We then hopped onto the ferry across the river (having avoided the "you wan tuk-tuk" comments being yelled from all directions and starting walking to our guesthouse.
Ended up in a different place to the one we thought we had booked, but was actually a relief as the owner of the one we wanted had 7 dogs (see later story!).
Guest house was nice and clean and the owner very friendly and for 6 pounds fifty a night who can complain? The owner's father then took us on a tour of the local temples in his tuk-tuk.. We must have seen about 10 temples in those 4 hours, including Wat Maharat (see picture) and a 10 minute ride on an Elephant.
Decided to head out that evening to find one of the lonely planet recommended restaurants (Mums stop reading here). Got about halfway there before we were savaged by a pack of dogs. OK, so "savaged" may be a bit extreme, and a "pack" may be a bit of an exageration.. What actually happened is we were walking along the pavement when we came across a dog looking a bit menacing. I was a bit concerned as there were also two other sleepy looking dogs...Stu was undeterred and insisted we carry on. So, just when we go to the stage when it was too late to go back - all three dogs get up and start barking - loudly. So we decide to start walking away, quickly. So the dogs start following us, a bit quicker. So we start a slow run. So the dogs start a slow run. Just as we are about to break into a sprint I look up to see a couple sitting in the van in front of us and think - "thank god - we will be fine now". Then I realise they are laughing at us.
After that, I wouldn't let Stu make me walk anywhere around Ayuthaya after dark.
Fortunately there were some restaurants a bit nearer our guest house where we managed to get some dinner and I chose the hottest thing on the menu - though I think I did a pretty good job - even Stu was impressed.
Sunday 27th November
Decided that we deserved a line in. When we finally got going we realised that it was a VERY hot day. So, headed straight for the coolness of an internet cafe. Basically continued to have a pretty lazy day until we decided to hit the temples again with the hope of seeing a sunset...
Didn't get to the first one as there were dogs lining the entrance (see above) and we also saw a massive scary looking lizard in the pond nearby. We were then attacked by red ants and so at that point decided to head straight for the nearest restaurant (coincidentally the one we had been looking for the night before) for some beers. Decided that we should also eat there as couldn't face walking around avoiding any more dogs to try and find another.
Finally the time came when we had to leave and there was no way I was walking home.
We scoured the nearby streets for tuk-tuks to no avail so finally settled on a "moto" - a motorbike with a driver with both of us sat on the back! Stu got to go in the middle so I was left at the back with no where to put my feet so they just dangled in mid air. Thankfully we were only going down the road, and these people don't seem to drive very fast! At least it gave us some practise for travelling around Phnom Penh!!
Had an earlyish night as flight tomorrow to Phnom Penh leaves at 7am and we are an hour from the airport!
Lots of love,
Hot Stuamy
