Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Another bad weather day in Shanghai - the thick fog and pollution combo persisted so, after finally tracking down a copy of Lonely Planet, we headed through the art and antiques quarter of the city to the museum to take in some ancient Chinese art, sculptures, calligrapghy and traditional ethnic costumes. It was very interesting but as the museum was just so massive we were exhausted by the end of the day a tad cultured out!
We psyched ourselves up to face the train station again in order to buy onward tickets. This turned into a bit of a long process as we couldn't actually get where we wanted to go in China because it seems every man and his dog are on the move at the moment. We have therefore had to cut out some of what we had to do which we were gutted at and let ourselves be dictated by where and when the trains go. This has limited us to the big cities but we have come to the conclusion along with every other traveller that trying to get around China at the moment is nigh on impossible!
The following day we headed down to the Bund which is the main tourist centre of Shanghai (Bund means embankment of a muddy waterfront in case you were wondering. The weather again foiled our attempts to get a good view of Pudong over the water so after walking along the river trying to avoid the obligatory tradesmen and Kodak stands we headed down to take the Tourist Tunnel over to Pudong. This was definitely a psychedlic experience - travelling under the bund in an electric cart whilst lots of lights flashed and a man with a very deep voice spoke of meteors, heaven and hell and flowers?! Pudong is definitely a work in progress - there are skyscrapers and hotels popping up all over the place. Its main claim to fame is that it houses the Jinmao Tower - the tallest building in China and 4th tallest in the world. Apart from this there was very little to see so we headed into town for dinner before tracking down an Irish bar and meeting a group of rather drunk expats. The night deteriorated rapidly and we ended up in a club with hundreds of other people where several men dressed in lederhosen (?spelling) danced on the bar!
Not much sightseeing was done the next day, we dragged ourselves out of bed and across the road to McDonalds (not a day for sampling the local cuisine I can tell you!) and then back to bed, and then to a buffet restaurant where we stuffed ourselves silly with delicious meats and vegetables...and then back to bed of course!
After recovering fully from our night of over indulgence we set off for the Jade Buddha temple. Apparently the story goes that a monk travelled to Myanmar via Tibet, lugged the Buddha back to its present site and then went off on a mission to gather money in order to build a temple around it. He did a pretty good job too as the temple was really lovely - there were lots of people worshipping at the time and it was fascinating to watch the ritual of lighting the incense and then praying to each corner of the temple before offering money or fruit to Buddha.
Our time in Shanghai came to a close when we picked up our rucksacks and headed for the dreaded train station - you really do feel like a cow being herded by the over zealous "guards"! Xian here we come....
