Steve and I were more then ready to leave Phnom Penh after 2 days there so we headed to Sihanoukville for some beach time. Roger remaind in the capital for a few more days where he and Chris had a racaous night out and a spot of go-karting where he took the winners podium!
We stayed near Occheutal beach which is the largest beach area and seemed to have planty of place to stay. We spent 2 nights in a lovely bungalow on stilts with views of the beach. The beach was nice and the water clear the main area for eating and drinking was located on the beach front.
Begging and beach sellers were a major problem in Sihanoukville, you never had more then 10 mins between them (that could actually be on a good day!) Tourists are told not to buy anything off the children because it only encourages them instead of getting them off the beach and into school where an education will fair them better in the long run. If you ever had a bit of food left on your plate of even a dribble in your coke can turn your head and it's gone. The boys selling jewellery were truely hideous swearing at you if you didn't buy anything, (these kids were no more then 9!)
A hotel was also shut down while we were there due to a 60 yr old man being caught with a 12 year old girl. Accommodation was rat free but being chinese new year everywhere was booked up and really busy. I never knew that Chinese New Year was so celebrated in Cambodia and that most people shut up shop for 1-2 weeks.
Roger and the others joined us, he and Chris had some very messy nights i think they were bad for each other always egging the other on!
We all went on a boat trip for the day Roger wasn't feeling too well so stayed behind to see the doctor. When we got back he was hooked up to a drip and had had numerous injections, he was quite poorly for a few days but perked up quick and is all ok now, the doctor thought he had Typhiod but when there's such a huge language barrier it's really hard to be sure. But he's all better now.
I know all the above paints a really really bad image of the place but we had a good time it was away from the city , the sun was shining, food was good, beer was 25 cents and we didn't have work the next day.
I'm really not sure how i feel about Cambodia they have alot of social problems and i'm not overly enamoured by the people. Overal i just feel a bit "MEH"
