We arise early(ish) to fuel our bodies for the day ahead. Given Af's obvious memory embellishments and flights of fancy (noticed over a few beers last night) we want to be prepared for all eventualities.
We need not have worried; his pills and ointments had obviously done their job; and Af would have made Raleigh, Drake & Scott proud as he navigated us through the perilous highways and byways of the English countryside to our destination: Stratford - Upon - Avon, birth-place of Sir William Shakespeare.
Having been 'in the neighbourhood' of the Globe Theatre when staying with Clare in London; it seemed fitting that we explore this delightful town which nurtured the young Shakespeare. We were delighted to see a large number of canal boats moored on the Avon, the majority beautifully maintained and painted in variety of colours.
After being presented with a lovely souvenir guide by Sue; we have a drink at the waters edge in the sun and watch the swans vying for titbits being thrown their way by nearby diners.
We briefly made the acquaintance of Sues nephew who pointed us in the direction of Shakespeare's resting place. We strolled the banks of the Avon enjoying the scenery and eventually arrived at a beautiful church where The Bard was laid to rest.
Denise and I are both enthralled by the beautifully preserved Tudor style buildings, many with exposed beams; that line the streets as we search for a suitable place to lunch. Loathe to part with any of our limbs in the stead of payment as demanded by several places, we settle on a fine establishment serving tea, scones and clotted cream. I might add Sir Ian was ever the gentleman in refusing to barter our wives in lieu of payment at any point; although sorely tempted he remained steadfast.
Once again we wended our way through the streets, stopping often to take in the sights and snap photographs. Sadly our onward journey was calling and we made our way back to the car park and journeyed back to Wellingborough.
Reunited with our vehicle, we bid a fond farewell to Sir Ian and the fair Lady Susan. Many, many thanks Af and Sue for your generosity, memorable times, and enduring friendship.
