Climbed back into the high mountains today. Over 4,000 ft of climbing took us from Albenga, up through Villanova, Garlenda, Casanova Lerrone, Degna, Vellego and on up to the pass at Ginestro, from which the views in all directions were stunning.
Plenty of free food to be had en route, in the form of wild fig trees.
At the pass we met a couple of Germans. They advised us on a place to stay tonight. That place was Taggia - so to Taggia we pedalled. Posters in Taggia indicated that there was €1,000 reward for anyone finding an escaped crocodile.
Unfortunately, when we got there (and, notwithstanding the aberrant croc.) there was no accommodation available so we pushed on to Sanremo.
Regrettably, and I'm not sure how it happened (but bad signage was the main factor), we found ourselves, on the run-in to Sanremo, inside a 1.6km motorway tunnel. There was no way to turn back, so we dismounted and carefully walked through on the side path. Not surprisingly, the local carabinieri were there to greet us when we emerged. But they were fine (and tacitly agreed that the signage was lacking).
At Sanremo, we were in no mood to eat well - just too hot, sticky and tired. So we went local and refuelled on beer and burgers. Cheep and cheerful.
The town has got a lot more character than a lot of the riviera. So, whilst no planning involved, the day was fine.
