Steve and Lorna gallavanting around the world
Hoi An
(3 Nights)
We arrived at 6am - how jaded we felt after the sleepless 12 hour bus ride!
Luckily Charmaine had given us the address of a delightful hotel "An Huy". Were we spent the next 3 nights. We crashed for a couple of hours before heading on to the streets - famous for their tailors! I was in heaven!
Hoi An is an enchanting city lying on the river. It is a Unesco World Heritage site. You certainly feel like you are walking on the pages of an ancient book. The buildings are run down with brightly coloured facades. The streets are lined with colourful traditional silk lanterns.
In nooks and crannies you stumble across ancient temples, bars, shops, tailors, galleries and restaurants. We fell in love with this place!
Apart from all this my favourite part were the TAILORS! They are amazing and can knock up a suit in a day tailored specially for you! Or point at an outfit in a magazine of a dress you like and voila it's yours! I got a 3 piece suite, 2 dresses, a shirt , a skirt and top and a pair of shoes ( ahh this place is also famous for their cobblers) Steve got a great suit and 3 shirts. All this for under $300!!!!!!
It was all a bit of an overwhelming experience and the pushy sales girls do know how to pressurize you! I know I will be thinking back on this and saying oooh I could have and should have got this made.... Hey ho.
We also spent a romantic Valentines day in this lovely place. Great traditional foods and the very best chocolate cakes we have ever ever had.
I think the only disturbing part that will stay with us was the daily 4am wake-up call made by the squealing piggys at the local market being slaughtered!!!!! A chilling sound when a squeal turns to a gargle.
We left the sunny streets of Hoi An for Danang Airport - looking forward to a nice short sweet flight to the capital Hanoi. (After the last nightmare journey we decided to treat ourselves)
