Luang Prabang - Laos
Our plane into Laos was very small with propellers. What an experience. We flew from Hanoi - Vietnam to Vientiene Laos capital. We have heard the capital isn't that great and with time not on our side we flew straight to Luang Prabang. The airport in Vientiene was funny. They basically made you check your own bags, put them on the plane, and check your own passport. Yes that looks like me you're free to fly!
The 30 min flight to Luang Prabang was bumpy to say the least. We felt sick. Coming into land Luang Prabang was incredible. A small town nestled between two rivers surrounded by mountains. A lot different to Vietnam!
As soon as we got out of the airport (which took about 8 minutes) we could sense Laos was going to be perfect. Luang Prabang has practically no cars or scooters! it was a small very friendly town with monks walking everywhere! Luang Prabang is a world heritage site with many many temples and pagodas.
We found a great litle guesthouse nestled in a little alleyway surrounded by local houses. Mama, the owner was wonderful. Sabadaaaaaiiiiiiiiii (heeeeelllllloooooo) Bananaaaaaaaa Teaaaaaaa coffeeeeeeee. Get the picture! It was a very friendly place where the local kids came running to play. I am now the village paper plane maker!
The night market was also different to anything we had experienced. Not one person pressured you into buying from them! We were free to browse. No one was tugging at our arms. No Tuk-Tuk drivers hassling us!!! This is just what we needed. Luang Prabang is so chilled out that the bars etc close around 10:30, and there's a curfew where everyone has to be indoors by 12pm!
Kate our friend from Koh Chang and Cambodia met us for a few days. We rented bicycles, and in the very quiet streets she managed to get knocked of her bike! Luckily she was ok, just a very angry local lady on a scooter. Whoops.
We went to the amazing multi tiered waterfalls. The water was incredibly blue. One fall cascading down into a pool then down again to another pool etc. Beautiful. We even swang on the rope swing over the pool with the lovely local kids.
The monks here are very friendly. We found some monks that had just finished having an English lesson, we sat with them for a couple of hours chatting. Cool experience. The following morning we took part in the Alms. Alms happens at 6.30 every morning, the monks come onto the street where the people of the town make donations and gifts of food. Kate bought a bag of sticky rice and placed it into one monks bowl. We then sat back to see the local people breaking the rice into small pieces and sharing it amongst the monks. Kate's contribution was so generous it filled the monks bowl making him unable to collect anything else!!! Whoops, the poor guy will be eating nothing but rice today. We laughed for ages!
Tomorrow we are leaving Luang Prabang to head North to an even sleepier town. We hope it's as nice as Luang Prabang. We really do love it here!
