After one night in Riohacha we made our way to Uribia which is the biggest town of the Wayuu people. The Wayuu´s are the indigenous people of La Guajra province the most northern in Colombia. It´s basically desert, with cacti being used as very effective fences. Uribia is all hustle and bustle with chickens, goats and dogs swerving in and out of the cars, trucks, bikes, rickshaws and ´pedestrians´, one dog didn´t do enough swerving and was a rather unpleasant landmark for us to navigate our way home. Again we were the Posh and Becks of the town with people stopping to have a look at the ´Fire God´. As we are on our way up to Cabo de la Vela we knew we´d only be in Uribia for one night so we popped over to the nearby town of Manuare. It´s basically a large Salt plant with tons of the stuff being taken from the sea. I have to confess we paid our first bribe here. The plant was closed to the public and when we asked the security guard he told us so, however even our fledgling Spanish enabled us to work out that we could have a look around if we wanted as long as we paid an éntrance fee´ which we were allowed to determine. 5,000 pesos, don´t panic that´s about 1.75 of Her Majesty´s Sterling and some water got us in.
Having looked around and taken a few snaps we headed for lunch on the beach, well I did anyway, Alison was feeling a little unwell, so much so a man was called into action with a bucket of water in the establishment´s latrines - enough detail.
Off across the desert to Cabo de la Vela tomorrow.
