After arriving into Cusco we went to a hostel nearby where we paid for a shower and the opportunity to repack our bags. Then we hopped straight onto the night bus to Puno. This is by far the most luxurious bus I have ever been on - for 45 soles (£10) we had fully reclining seats, it was so comfortable! We arrived into Puno at 4.30 and went straight to our hostel (which a bit like a homestay because it is family run). We got breakfast and then went on a boat trip to the islands on lake Titicaca, our lovely host Jenny Juno (from Puno) came with us to make sure we got on the right boat etc. To thank her for this Aoidin knocked her to the ground (she fell on a slippy part of the pier taking Jenny Juno and another woman out with her - it was a little funny to watch!).
First we visited the floating reed islands of the Uros people - these are islands made completely of reeds, they live in houses made of reeds, their boats are made of reads, they dry reads for fire wood and they eat reeds! After a tour of the very small island (there are about 40 different floating islands) and a meeting with the president we went for a trip in his reed boat. After that we got back in the ferry and went to Taquile one of the larger islands in lake Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world). After about 2 hours we reached the island which was interesting to see but the number of tourists and the lack of actual interaction with the locals made it feel I little too zoo like for me (like we were there purely to look at people). Anyway after lunch we headed back for Puno where Aoidin and I went for a slap up meal of Alpaca steak (it was really nice - I'd describe it as mutton like) before getting an early night as we were knackered and had an early start to get to Ariquepa.
