Taaaaalllinnnnn! This is one of my favourite European cities! It is so beautiful and so many people would never consider going there but YOU SHOULD! It's so pretty :)
We arrived by bus around lunch time and found out we could either take a tram or walk for 2.5km. We decided to walk since that always helps you get your bearings and you also see a lot more. Our first impression was like wowwww it's so modern and looks so nice! There were lots of big shiny glass buildings etc and I felt totally safe! There was a lot less snow than in Vilnius and Riga, but the cold actually felt a lot harsher and sharper so that was quite hard to deal with. I don't have much experience with the cold so I wasn't real sure what to do about it! I wanted to see as much as I could but I was still super cold and going numb despite wearing fluffy boots and gloves etc.
Our hostel was right in the middle of the old town which was convenient. In contrast to Riga, the old town in Tallinn is huge despite being a much smaller city than Riga. The hostel seemed really nice however on the first night we had issues such as rubbish wifi, no hot water and heating wasn't working despite below zero temperatures!
On our first night we went to a restaurant called Elevant that the tour guide recommended to us (he too was in Tallinn when we were). The restaurant is Indian but with an Estonian twist. I had a super, super tasty meal with lots of vegetables, cashews, rice and a creamy nut sauce :') Matt and Dave ordered this thing where they give you two curries but you don't know what they are. They ended up receiving one with moose meat, one with pork, then also rice, bread, popadoms, and a big mince pie. Nomnom.
After we headed to the Christmas market and I was so so happy! It was in the old town but eeeee it was just beautiful! I ate some different flavoured nuts like ginger and honey etc and drank lots of Christmas drink and hot wine! It's weird because the hot wine actually does completely warm you up from the very core!
The next day we went to have breakfast at a little cafe. It was so tasty and cheap! I ate a cinnamon pie, a poppy seed pie, and a slice of crumple chocolate cake (oh the calories).
After we tried out a free tour. The tour was really interesting BUT it was so cold which meant it was really hard to focus. But we learnt cool things about Estonian language, old and recent history, a dance, etc. The tour lasted for two hours and we visited lots of historical towers, walls, buildings, got a really good view of the seaside (Gulf of Finland) and so on.
The tour finished in the centre of the old town so we had our lunch in a little medieval cafe. It was all in the theme of the old times so the staff were dressed up, the only lighting was candles, the food was being cooked right in front of us and there was only a few options. Matt and Dave had ox sausages with elk soup. I settled with a cabbage pie - which was actually super tasty!
We eventually got back to Warsaw on Tuesday evening around 11.30pm. Matt and I had an exam lunch time on Wednesday so the flight back home was pretty stressful since we were trying so hard to learn our whole course in one short flight hahahaha - but don't worry we got good results in the end so we have obviously mastered this last minute study thing :)
That's the majority of what we did in Tallinn that is worth mentioning. But I really would recommend that you check it out. No one ever hears about Tallinn but it's such a beautiful hidden city!!!
Right now I'm on a flight heading to Rome so keep checking this space as there will be a new and I'm sure very interesting update soon!
Love you all xx
