We will keep in memory Indonesia as multi-ethnic and especially multi-religious country. Even though around 90% of Indonesians are Muslim, you find not only beautiful mosques all around the country, but also the Hindu culture spread around Bali, the spectacular Buddhist temple of Borobudur in Java, as well as Christian churches from the Portuguese and Dutch colonial period. Especially the fact that a few metres next to the biggest Christian church in Jakarta lies the third biggest mosque in the world (which was built by a Christian architect) shows how the different religious live door to door next to each other. The impression we had is that Islam is mostly practiced in a quiet moderate way. And even if 5 times a day you hear several muezzin shouting the Coran from the minarets in the town, you can also see some women cover their hairs while some others are dressed up totally western like, some people drink alcohol and eating pork sate and some others not… And throughout all the religious, shouldn't be forget the distinctive proud attitude of the typical Indonesian, that are very friendly…if you don't cross the line…
But Indonesia is not only this!
We enjoyed the beautiful beaches of Lombok and Bali, made some first surf experiences, and snorkelled together with big water turtles.
We marvelled face to the volcanic mountain area around Mt. Bromo: the view of the mystical moon-like landscape just after the sunrise was an unforgettable experience!
We tasted the incredible variety of local food, which was more or less sweet/spicy according to the region were we were travelling, and sipped many Bintang in front of the sunset.
