Today was a vague lie in but given the time change etc we were up and about at 8:30am. We decided to take a walk to the resort centre 8 - 10 minutes across the dunes and it was hot, red and full of flies. When walking through we came across a Thorny Devil, what an amazing creature ! It looks like it is covered in leaves and moves really, really slowly.
We ate breakfast at the deli and it was nice enough but the service was very slow given we had nothing very complex. Anyway after this we had a wander through the resort which as expected was full of souvenir shops but also had a well stocked supermarket which was not as expensive as expected given the nearest town is Alice, it was actually cheaper than the onestop shop in Adelaide. We invested in fly nets for us all which made our day and awful lot more pleasant.
We then walked back to the hotel and took the girls swimming, David did the majority of this as I was not feeling 100%. The girls had a couple of hours in the pool and we then had lunch from the kiosk. We tried to eat this by the pool but it was frankly a nightmare due to the flies so we retreated to our room. The girls ate a little better here but still not well.
We then spent time in the room out of the heat and relaxing before our trip. Elizabeth fell asleep to the extent we managed to get her dressed and suncreamed without her waking up. Our trip to the Olgas and dunes started at 4pm and the bus arrived nearer 4:15 as we were the last pickup. The driver, Lee, was very amusing and full of good information. The drive gave us some great views of Uluru before we left it behind on our way to the Olgas and the gorge walk. We had a brief stop at a view point in the dunes which had great views of both rocks. Quite often the Olgas are called the other rocks, the guide believes this is unfair and I agree as they are in their own way just as stunning as Uluru.
We the drove to the Gorge walk and went at our own pace rather than try and keep up as the pushchair conditions were testing. We reached a reasonable way but eventually we abandoned the pushchair and carried on without it. Alex did a good job of walking and Elizabeth rode on David's head. The flies here were intense and Alex did really well without her net which we mislaid, we offered ours but she refused. The sides of the gorge were really sheer with caves at points in them. Alex decided that the ones at the top were bedrooms, the bottom living rooms and the ones in the middle were bathrooms. The rock here is conglomorate and there are 36 peaks.
After the walk we drove to the viewing point for sunset, we drank sparkling wine and ate bread with oil and vinegar, while we watched the rocks change colour. This was not the main thing that struck me but rather the calm of the environment. At the viewing point were maybe 20 -30 people as opposed to the 2000 odd at Uluru. After this we drove back to the resort and had dinner in the buffet restaurant which proved to be expensive and disappointing verging on rubbish. After this we put the girls to bed before repacking for our journey tomorrow.
