Japan Travels
I wasn't sure what to expect from Disney Sea. Most reviews say that it is good, but not quite as good as Disneyland, despite drawing similar crowd numbers. Inferior park, same stupid crowds? Sounds great. Again we got the trains to Maihama (the Disney resort train station) with no problems. We bought 2 day passes to the Disney monorail, and waited a few minutes for it to arrive. When it did, everything about it was sickeningly Mickey Mouse. Mickey was on the outside, Mickey was on the floors, the walls and the ceiling of the interior, the windows were the shape of a Mickey Mouse head and even the grab handles dangling from the ceiling were in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head. We got off the stupid monorail at the Disney Sea gates after a 5 minute journey. We waltzed straight through the turnstiles as we already had our tickets from yesterday. The first thing we noticed was the crowds. Compared to yesterday they were notably absent. There was still lots of people, but nowhere near the number of people at Disneyland yesterday, so it was a pleasant surprise. We started off by exploring the park, and getting a fastpass for the Journey to the Centre of the Earth ride. While waiting for the stupid fastpass to reach time validity window, we explored an underground cave filled with kids rides called Triton's Kingdom. The girls loved it, as it was all styled and lit very effectively to appear as though you were under water. After an hour or so we had to drag Charlotte and Angela out of there. I then went on my Centre of the Earth ride, which was a rollercoaster which involved 5 minutes of slowly rolling through a twisty tunnel filled with sparkly objects and flashing things, followed by 30 seconds or less of actually going at a decent speed like a rollercoaster should. While I was on the ride, Veronica lined up for photos with Ariel, the Little Mermaid. Basically this was another excuse for the park to make money, as after they forced you to line up, they were then selling photos back to you. Out of the goodness of their hearts however, if you were not buying one of their photographs, you were permitted to take a single photo with your own camera. So after Veronica took about a dozen shots, and then refused to purchase their photograph, it was time to come back and meet up with me again. Ariel was apparently another character who was happy just to be able to speak english again, as she spent a lot of time chatting to the girls. When Veronica met back up with me, we soon realised why crowd numbers were down when the rain started to fall. We made a dash for the nearby Arabian Coast section of the park, at which point we got some seats in a restaurant, and ordered a curry sampler, which was just 3 small dishes of curry, a small piece of bread and a scoop of rice for $10. I found out soon after that the curry should have came with a warning that it may induce minor side effects, such as death. There was a chicken curry, a beef curry and a prawn curry. Veronica ate the chicken curry, sharing the rice with the girls, while I ate the beef and prawn curry. About 10 minutes later I felt very lightheaded and very very sick. I had some more liquids, and a rest and eventually shook the feeling that I was going to die, but it was very strange. Veronica didn't feel any problems so there was nothing wrong with the chicken curry or the rice evidently. For the next few hours the rain drizzled down in 15 minute bursts, after which time it would stop, and look like it would clear up, only to bucket down again a short time later. I must say I was extremely happy with this. It was cool in the middle of the day without the aid of an air conditioner for the first time on the trip, and the crowd seemed to disappear after it had been raining for an hour or two. The crown numbers after the rain were absolutely perfect. Time for some rides. We took a paddle steamer around the waterways which run all through the park, went on a bunch of other rides such as the carousel, rollercoaster, train, as well as a ride around a shallow pond, where you must choose "wet" or "dry" before going on. Charlotte and I chose "wet" while Veronica and Angela chose "dry". It was Charlotte's favorite ride of the day, so much so that she made us run around and get on again (which we were able to do with no wait time at all because there was no crowd). We stopped in for some lunch for the girls, and wondered why the restaurant seating was being guarded by a few Disney staff with clickers. We weren't allowed in until we proved that we had actually bought some chips from the restaurant, at which time they did a head count, and told us we could go in. We found out why when the lights dimmed. We had stumbled upon a lunchtime Disney character stage show. Each show went for about 10 minutes, and the first one starred Mickey, Donald and Goofy, and the second show after a short break starred Chip and Dale and Donald Duck. I'm not sure how many of these shows they put on, as we left after the 2nd show. Quite a nice little bonus though. After a few more rides of some of the rides we had already been on, we made it out to the centre lake area, just in time for the afternoon water show "Mythica" which was just starting. Consisting of a large centre float, lots of jetskis, lots of water cannons, fireworks, and a variety of large float style boats, many of which contained fire breathing dragons, Mythica told a very moving and very upliftinig story. What that story was about we had absolutely no idea in the slightest, as it was all narrated in Japanese. There was plenty of fire and splashing things to keep us amused, so it wasn't a problem that we had no clue why the boats and jetskis were circling around blasting water and fire at each other. It was actually very well done, even if we had no idea what the purpose of the whole thing was. After the show, it was beginning to get late, and we were beginning to feel like there was little of the park left to explore. I went on the Indiana Jones ride, which was very ordinary. Charlotte and I also walked around to the Stormrider ride, which I must say if you only had time to go on one ride at the park, this one would be it. We didn't have fastpass tickets, but it was only a 20 minute wait. Once inside you are bucked into a movie theater which is designed to resemble the inside of a small futuristic airplane, in which you fly into the eye of a tornado. The seats buck, rise and fall corresponding to the image on the screen, giving you the very effective illusion that you are flying. Once inside the tornado, you shoot off a rocket which comes back and rams into your ship, at which point the rocket comes spearing down from the ceiling for effect. And guess who's head it came spearing down towards. Instinctively I looked up when it first started to come "through" the ceiling, and then it stopped about 2 feet from my head. Once I realised I was ducking in my seat and people were laughing at me I was a little embarrassed. An excellent ride though. Would have liked to have 2 or 3 more rides to see things I missed. Onto the Tower of Terror, which I had a fastpass for, and the last ride of the day. No amount of begging could make Charlotte come on it with me, as she was just too tired and too scared to muster up the courage to come on it. As it turns out it was a quite ordinary ride. Basically it leads you through a series of background info about the setting (all in Japanese of course) before eventually leading you into a carriage, and dragging you up about 5 or 6 floors for a freefall style ride. Small freefall, then it drags you back up, then a larger freefall, then up again, then a final freefall to the ground floor. Pretty good, and probably the 2nd best ride in the park, but still not great. With that done it was about 7:45pm, and definitely time to go, as we had 3 tired girls, a decent train trip ahead of us, and none of us had eaten a decent lunch, let alone thought about dinner. Another water show was starting at 8:10pm, which would precede the Disney fireworks at 8:30pm, but this would mean that we wouldn't be leaving the park until about 9:30pm, at which time we would be battling everyone else on the way out. I'm not sure I could have stayed awake, and I know the girls couldn't have. Plus we plan to stay late tomorrow night at Disneyland to see the closing parade and the fireworks, so we don't need to see it 2 nights in a row. By the time we got the monorail, and 2 trains it was 9:15pm before we got back to Shin-Yokohama. A quick bite to eat from the eatery underneath the train station, and then back to the hotel for some much needed sleep, before doing it all again tomorrow. I'm hoping it rains again tomorrow. We will be at Disneyland for the whole day tomorrow, as we have seen just about all that Disney Sea had to offer in one day today. Disney Sea was good, but not great. Now I've been there, I'm glad I did, but I wouldn't go back. Tomorrow we attempt to do all of the parts of Disneyland that we didn't have the time and/or opportunity to do on Wednesday.
