Japan Travels
A deliberately empty day in the itinerary today.
With the non-stop madness of Disneyland and Disney Sea behind us, we needed a day of doing not much at all, to allow ourselves to recover.
For the last time we went down and had a fantastic breakfast at the Palm and Fountain Terrace hotel. I think I'll miss the breakfasts at this hotel. Quick, easy and very, very good.
Being a Disney partner hotel, guessed are blessed with the presence of a Disney merchandise shop on the ground floor, selling a wide range of the same astronomically priced genuine Disney junk that they sell at the stores within Disneyland. So naturally, after breakfast we went in there to buy a wide variety of Disney branded bric-a-brac. The girls loved it though, and we haven't actually bought any souvenirs up to this point, so we've done reasonably well.
The worst part about leaving a hotel is the packing. Luckily this hotel had an 11am check-out time, which made things slightly less stressful. And with all of our belongings jammed in the suitcases, which are getting heavier and heavier, we bid sayonara to the permanently chronically joyful front desk staff as we handed in our card-keys, and boarded the courtesy bus for one last Disney themed ride to Maihama station.
We're heading to Kawasaki today, which could just be considered a suburb of Tokyo (and maybe it is?). It's around 15 minutes, and only a few stops, from Tokyo station. I chose this location because it has a wide variety of restaurants and shopping, and should we choose to go to Hakone tomorrow, it makes it a very simple trip.
Honestly, I should have just stayed in Toyko. Kawasaki was no less crowded, and no more convenient, than what we've witnessed in any of the other Tokyo regions we've stayed in. Yokohama seemed more laid back to me last time we were here. Perhaps we should have gone there.
No matter, we found our way to the station, and pushed through the massive crowds, and got to the hotel without a problem. Leaving the bags at the hotel, since we were a little early to check in, we ventured over towards the station, and into a shopping mall to kill some time. Browsing through a few shops, we came across an ABC Mart, which sells shoes for around 30% - 50% of the price of Australian stores (since Australian's get price gouged). Browsing around the ABC Mart made one particular guy very excited and energetic, as he bounced around and offered suggestions and assistance, none of which I had any hope of understanding. Eventually I chose some shoes, which at around AU$100, which made my new little friend extra extra excited. I think it broke the poor little guy's heart when he didn't have the shoe in my size. He made all kinds of sad and apologetic Japanese sounding noises.
So after checking in, and catching up on the blog writing, we ventured over to Lazona plaza for dinner, and eager to relive one of the best burgers I'd ever had from Zats Burger Cafe we entered the food court...to find that Zats had been replaced with some other burger place. Their offerings looked ok, so I had one of their "Ebi Burger Nacho Setto", which roughly translates to Burger with prawns on it, and nachos on the side. The photo makes it look great. It wasn't. It was ordinary. The nachos had literally 8 corn chips, with a teaspoon of meat, salsa and avocado, and I'm not sure how they make a burger with so much topping taste so bland. It was quite an achievement.
Charlotte and Veronica had Katsudon, which is basically a pork snitzel on rice, with egg and katsudon sauce, Angela had the best meal of the night, with a delicious teriyaki chicken fillet dinner, and Isabelle, ever adventurous, ate my chips.
Unsure of whether we want to do the big and not inexpensive day trip to Hakone tomorrow, or something simpler. I guess we'll decide in the morning.
