We pulled out of Halfmoon Bay, about 30 minutes after Matt & Ilene (Inconseavable). They were stopping at Panco Fuel Dock to fill up their fuel, while we chose to wait until Newburgh where it is 50 cents a gallon cheaper. When we reached Panco they were still fueling so we continued up river at an idle, until they finished and caught up to us.
As we approached the dock at Riverwalk Marina, I started to question if staying there would be a good idea. The docks are not protected from the river and with a 15+ knot wind coming down the river, the docks were rocking pretty good, and there was very little room between the docks to maneuver. After speaking with the dock master, he directed us to the one section of dock where I felt we could dock we little issues. It was also provided the best protection from the wind and any wakes coming from the river.
After docking we decided to bring out our big inflatable fenders. These fenders are great for holding the boat off the dock where it is rough, and they would protect us from the small section of steel protruding from the docks. (Later these small section of steel would bite us in the ass!!!!)
Newburgh is not a stop loopers normally make, we choose to stop for two reason. First we could not finds slips at Kingston (the more popular stop) and second we are trying to slow down our trip to be near Albany, when I have to head back to NJ next week.
Newburgh turned out to be a great stop. Along the riverfront there are 10 restaurants within sight of the docks, and a local brewery ½ mile away. We walked to the brewery were we enjoyed a couple of drinks while listening to the Whisker Wives, A local band couple that played great music.
After the brewery and naps, we headed to Billy Joe's RIbhouse for dinner. The ribs were delicious, and the food came quickly. Not that we will ever be back in Newburgh, but if we did I would eat there again.
Newburgh is a great stop, but it is only good for one night, there is not much else to do, other than go out to eat.
Our next stop is Kingston NY, where we have reservations at Rondout Yacht Basin.
