For all of the bad winds that have been plaguing the east coast for the past week, we got lucky and had a perfect day for our run up the Atlantic Coast and the Hudson River. The seas had a very gentle 2' swell, and almost no wind to speak of. The one challenge we did have was the fishing boat. There were a couple of spots where they were at least 50 boats gathered together. It is really fun dodging and weaving around them, but it was good to see so many boats out.
For the second time we got to experience the awe of coming into New York Harbor and seeing The Statue Of Liberty. This time we did not spend the night anchored there, instead we continued up the Hudson to Croton-On-Hudson. (Who ever came up with that name?) One perk of traveling with friends we were able to get some get pictures of our boat in front of Lady Liberty.
The weather was much better this time going through New York City, and we were able to see the city as we went up the river. The down side of the better weather is there was much more boat traffic. It was interesting to watch the Marine Police chase the jet skis that got to close to The Statue Of Liberty.
As we got north of the city, the boat traffic thinned out and the view got even better. The banks of the river are lined with trees, cliffs and trains. The freight trains heading south stretch for miles, and the come one right after another. They never cease to amaze me.
Arriving at Halfmoon Bay Marina, we were welcomed again by Steve the dockmaster. He had not changed one bit, running crazy from boat to boat to help them dock. There are 16 Loopers dock at Halfmoon Bay, some staying overnight, some for as long as two weeks. It is a good stop to see New York City or travel back home. It is easy for loopers to get to the train station form here.
Friday dock there were plans for all the loopers to meet at 5pm for docktails, and once again Mother Nature had other plans. Instead of docktails, we walked into town with Inconseavable (Matt & Ilene), for Chinese food and ice cream for desert.
Saturday was spent working on our boats and washing them. Inconseavable had a clamp on their exhaust system come loose, and we had a problem with our engine synchronizer that I had to trouble shoot. It seems that the tachometer cable on the starboard engine is bad, causing the synchronizer to fail. Monday I will confirm that is the problem and order a new one. On our Great Loop trip, the same cable on the port engine failed. If the manufacturer agrees that it is the cable it is easy to replace once I get it.
Saturday night Mother Nature treated us better and we were able to have docktail, it was good to be able to swap stories with other loopers.
Our next stop will be Newburgh NY, it is only at 22 mile run, about 3 ½ hours, at a nice slow speed. Now that we are on the Hudson River we are slowing down our pace, and our stops will be closer.
