I do think this is the shortest run we have done on this trip, traveling a full 80 minutes, and going a whopping 9 miles. Mark & Karen (Kay Dee) stayed in Brunswick on their last loop and Mark claimed there was a restaurant in town that had the best hamburger and he wanted to go back. Both Angel & I were hoping it was better than the hamburger at Cabbage Key!
Since we only had 9 miles to travel, and the next 3 miles of the river are very shallow, we waited until just before high tide to head out. The water level difference between high tide and low tide here is 6 feet, and at times we only had 8 feet of water under us. If we went at low tide we would not have been comfortable with the water levels. Even with the tide up like it was we idle through the shallow sections.
Once we got to Brunswick Landing Marina, the three of us all fueled up the boats. Before deciding where to fuel up we call all of the marinas we plan to stop at, as well as other marinas nearby to find the best price fuel. Five cents a gallon does not sound like a huge difference, until you take on 246 gallons of diesel. Hopefully prices do not go up anymore, and they seem to be coming down just a little. I am not sure if that is because we are heading north, or if prices are really coming down.
Angel and I have a saying when it comes to docking, "Some days you watch the show, Some days you are the show." On the fuel dock they gave us our dock assignment, and we were all set to dock, in what should have been a very easy dock. There was a very heavy cross wind which would have pushed us right into the finger pier we were supposed to dock at. As we were coming in, the dock master switched us to the opposite dock with the wind blowing us out of the slip. Well to make a long story short, today we were the show. Thankfully due to an Kyle being an dock master, and her staff, and a little bit of luck and skill on our part, we made it into our slip without any damage to anything but my pride. While both Mark & Karen (Kay Dee) and Jim & Norma (Dorothy Gale) made it into their slip with no issues, two other boats that came in had as much difficultly as I did.
Once all of us got settled in and everything hooked up, we headed into town to find the best hamburger that Mark ever had. As we were walking through town, Mark kept saying, I think it is on the next block. That is very understandable, as sometimes we cannot remember what town we were in the night before, never mind what block a restaurant from a year ago is on. While we were walking Mark & Karen kept saying they hope the same cook is still there, and the burgers were as good as last time. As we finally find the right block, and we see Tipsey McSway's Bar & Grill and the open sign in the door. Mark tried to open the door, but it did not budge. We could see people inside, and thought maybe they only open for dinner, (It was around 3pm). A woman came to the door turn the open sign around to closed, and pointed to a sign that said they would open Tuesday and walked away. As we were looking for somewhere else to eat, a gentleman pointed to a Kona Water Ice Truck, and invited us over for free water ice. Apparently all Kona franchisees are required to give out free water ice on Tax Day. (4/18/22, this year). The guy promoting the Kona Water Ice told us, that several restaurants in the area are still having a hard time recovering from Covid and/or having a hard time finding employees. We ate our water ice as we walked to a local Pizza/Italian restaurant that turned out to be pretty good.
After we ate, we headed back to the marina, to rest up for Happy Hour (Do we sound really really old?). Every Monday the marina host a happy hour for all of the boats, with free beer and wine. We had hoped to meet up with other loopers at the happy hour, but there were to many people to figure out who was looping, and who were regulars at the marina.
After happy hour we called it a night, tomorrow we are heading to Halfmoon Marina, in Midway GA. Funny enough MIdway is about halfway between Brunswick and Savannah. It is one of the very few marinas in the area, our other choiuce is to anchor out for the night.
