To quote The Beatles todays trip was "The Long and Winding Road", Halfmoon Marina is only 34 miles from Brunswick but by boat it was 58 miles. Most of the trip we were surrounded by marsh, and not very much to look at. There were two highlight of today's trip. The first was when Angel decided to use the leftover Easter Ham and make Ham & Eggs for breakfast. She does make me breakfast everyday while we are underway, but it is always a treat to get a hot breakfast underway. The second was when two dolphins swam alongside us. I got a couple of pictures, but mostly pictures of my fingers. It is hard to watch them, watch where the boat is going and take pictures at the same time. Halfmoon Marina is about six miles off of our route on Blackbeard Creek, but it is about midway between Brunswick GA and Savannah GA and the only marina around.
There are no channel markers on that section of Blackbeard's Creek and as we got closer it was getting shallow in spots. Luckily it was hightide and still had enough water. Mark & Karen (Kay Dee) were leading the way, and when we were about two miles away, they called the marina for guidance getting to the marina. Kevin, the marina owner, gave Mark directions on how to proceed and where to stop and wait for him. Kevin hoped into a boat to meet us and escorted us in. Without his guidance, there is a good chance one or more of us would have run aground.
Halfmoon Marina is a very small marina that has seen better days. Kevin explained that he and a partner retired from law enforcement last year, and bought the marina. He is slowly making improvements and would like to add more docks in the future. He already has approval to reinstall the channel markers that are supposed to be in the creek, and is trying to get the creek surveyed so that the navigation charts can be updated.
There is nothing to do within walking or biking distance from the marina, but we knew that before we arrived. For us it was a place to dock for the night, on our way to Savannah. Kevin did offer to let us use either his pickup, or his partners Mustang if we need to go to the grocery store. He also gave us menus from two pizzerias that would deliver to the marina. When none of us needed groceries, he also offered his 4x4 if we just wanted to ride around the neighborhood to check out the houses. Angel and I took him up on that offer and went exploring. It is a small community of maybe 35 houses, but most of them are on the water and beautiful.
Tomorrow we head for Thunderbolt, GA (Savannah, GA)
