6am start to get packed, and to station for 7.19 train. Got to station to be told it was going to be 20 mins late. Ate train station platform food for breakfast! Eventually left just after 8am for uneventful journey back to Bangkok.
Attempted to get tuk-tuk, taxi and walk to the Royal Barges Museum, but was defeated by incomprehension of locals as to meaning of "barges", the heat, and eventually by the tuk-tuk driver who took us to completely the wrong place!
Walked from Siam Museum to the Royal Palace, which was closed until 2pm, due to Buddhist ceremonies taking place. Guard outside the gates tried to persuade us to go to all sorts of other places, and return later, but L wanted to go up to Koh San Road to find the market that Danny had told her about. Walked in the baking heat through the park (Royal Gardens) & had to cross many busy multi-lane roads. Stopped at a local food market to cool down and get drinks, then through covered flea market to get to KSR.
The whole street was full of expensive, over priced rubbish to sell to tourists, and young dumb western kids buying it all! After 20 mins or so, started to walk back, trying to get out of "tourist central" to return to Lumphini. Tuk-tuks and taxis were asking twice the going rate, and once we found the pier to get the water taxi, we were told that a 15 bhat journey was going to cost us 350B each …. but ….. "the babies go free!"
Walked back to the main road, and managed to get a taxi back to Lee's for 200B. Were given the same room, reclaimed luggage from storage downstairs, said hi to Danny, then showered & had a much needed change of clothes.
Back out to the "fishtank" restaurant (with free wifi!) - checked emails and cricket scores! Really good green curry with coconut, then banana samosas & ice cream for dessert! Via 7-11 for beers, then up to roof terrace to drink beer & chat to 2 young American guys about their experiences TEFL in Korea, whilst Somerset beat Warriors to reach the CLT20 semi-finals!
