J feeling better - managed to eat some breakfast (from 7-11 again!).
Decided that he was well enough to travel, so planned a 2 day trip to Ayuthaya. Packed day bags, and checked out of Lee's, leaving our main bags in storage there. Walked through Lumphini Park to the Metro station, where a local chap started to chat to us, and advised us that the area was badly flooded, and suggested Kanchanaburi, instead. Took a tuk-tuk (at his insistence) to the tourist information centre, where they suggested a 16,600 Bhat (£365) package trip! We told them that we were on a budget, and were politely shown the door!
Walked around the corner to a small market to get drinks and read guide book. Decided to get the train (100B each) from Bangkok Noi Train Station. Grabbed a tuk-tuk to the station, bought tickets, and waited 30 mins for departure.
Nice journey through the countryside, in noisy, slightly "old-fashioned" carriages, with all the windows and doors open, all the way!
Arrived in Kanchanaburi & walked to find accommodation. First place had no suitable family rooms, second place way too expensive! However, next door wanted 800B / night for a 2 level self contained room with 2 x double beds, wifi, hot water, plus a swimming pool. Managed to knock them down to 1500B for 2 nights - checked in, showered & changed, and went for a swim!
Nice meal at restaurant 'round the corner - kids got free ice cream, as the waitress took a shine to them!
Then L decided that we should visit the night market - walked for 30 mins in the pouring rain, only to reach the market as all the stalls are packing up! Back to hotel for a warming shower!
Then to bed, to watch Chris Gayle batter Somerset's bowlers with boundary after boundary! One win, one no result, one loss = final match is a MUST win!
