Decided to stay put, so a leisurely start to the day - were ready to leave by 10.30, which was the opening time of the Forrester Gallery, next door, in which there was a Steampunk exhibition. The centrepiece was a beautiful chrome & bronze motorbike, but D liked the machine for collecting samples from alternate time-line Earths, & L the "Aethernet" communications device. Some great ideas on display, brilliantly executed.
A glorious day, as we wandered round town - went to Steampunk HQ & saw the tunnelling locomotive, poked around in a few shops (especially the 1970s retro shop - L bought a knitted dress!), then to the museum for a second Steampunk exhibition - mostly costumes this time. Also looked at the local history displays, including almost a full Moa skeleton.
Back to the Empire for lunch, then drove over Cape Wanbrow to the yellow eyed penguin colony, but didn't see anything (too early in the day). Drove back to town via the lookout, for great views of the town & coastline, then to the café next door for coffee, hot chocolate & cakes for the kids!
Had a couple of hours before returning to the yellow eyed penguin colony, so sat in the downstairs lounge (real fire!) to watch "Whalerider" with the kids. Chicken/rice for tea, then back to the beach, where there was a penguin waiting for us, just a few feet from the path. Took some great close up photos, and a couple of the beach, 100m away, where we could just about make out a couple of penguins, coming in from the sea.
Back to the BPs, & put the kids straight to bed (still very tired after the late night, last night!), then downstairs for a while to read & write diary. After an hour or so, a nice Russian couple came in, & L started chatting, & we ended up watching "Snatch".
