Wow. The only glacier in the world that is in a state of equilibrium rather than receding, as there is enough snow to compensate for the amount of ice that melts. It stands a massive 60m above the water on average, and 5km wide. It's really hard to comprehend its size as you watch pieces of ice breaking off - some look tiny yet the sound they make as they hit the water suggests otherwise. We could have stayed and watched all day - making out shapes in the floating pieces of ice (it's like cloud watching), guessing which piece will fall next and hoping you'll see a bigger piece each time. It turns out we didn't have to stay long to see two huuuge pieces fall, one after the other. Ell got it on video too! The pieces of ice create a huge swell so if you're in a tourist boat at the time, you feel it! We went on the boat because that's what's offered to you before you start walking on the surrounding boardwalks. We both agreed that the boardwalk is even better than the boat trip beause you have a completely unobstructed view, and you are just as close as you get in the boat anyway. And, walking is free :)
