Today started with a dip in the pool, then dragging Lisa out of bed for breakfast at the local bakery. Pao de Queijo is a delicious fluffy scone-like bread on the outside, but torn open contains a lattice of holes with a great mild cheesy flavour. After breakfast, we took the trains to Barra Funda to arrange the next leg of our trip: A long bus ride to Santa Cruz. Following that ordeal and a great many lost in translation moments, we decided to walk to the central park, Parque do Iberapuera, and the Museum of Modern Art. The museum featured two 'themes': A look at the ancient stone carvings of Sao Paulo and anthropological musings into their origins, and a much more political theme of juxtaposition of the rich politicians of Brazil and the violent street crime. Parque do Iberapuera was incredible! Large pavement expanses filled with cyclists, skateboarders, and surprisingly roller skaters rubbed up against jungle-like vegetation, all wrapped around a serious of interconnected lakes. It was the Brazil you see in postcards, full of bright colours, vibrant vegetation, and people enjoying life. It was also full of music, with samba bands and people playing guitar littered throughout the place.
After a few hours dragging a very unmotivated Lisa around the park (it was hot), we walked back to the apartment, stopping at a petrol station for, of all things, two pints of ice cold beer! Here I had a great chat with a local ex-surfer named Marcus who had also stopped by for a beer. He told us we spoke like Americas, but were much more friendly! Arriving back to the apartment, we promptly flopped on the floor, not even making it to Felipe's couch before falling asleep.
