Ok so we have finally arrived in Palenque, it took us a 9 hour bus ride yesterday but we made it!! Today we started off early for a trip to Palenque ruins and then onto the Agua Azul waterfalls so its been a really long day but so much to see.
We´re now onto our 4th set of ruins and these were one of my favourites, just because of the scenery and the details in them. They have only uncovered about 20% of the entire complex so far because it takes them so long to dig the buildings out from under the mounds of earth and debris that has accumulated over the past 1500 years! Also as the guide said - this is Mexico so we work on Mexico time, which is always manana (tomorrow)! This is so true, everything runs on a whole different timescale here!!
Again there was so much history from the ruins, they found several tombs here in the last 50 years or so, so they´ve got quite a lot of artifacts that the other ruins havent had - like loads of jewellery and loads of stone carvings of writing to document important events etc. We had a pretty full morning looking round, and again finding out loads about the Mayans - different stuff again from before as these had quite a bit of history about Pakal who was the longest serving King here (ruled for about 65years) so everywhere you go there is images of him or stories about him.
After we left here, we headed to the waterfalls for lunch and a swim. Both the Misol Ha falls and Agua Azul were spectactular!! We had a swim in Agua Azul, which was pretty cold but it was refreshing after the long day around the ruins. Whilst we were having lunch, these local girls who could only have been about 5yrs old to about 9yrs kept coming round trying to sell us all kinds of fruit. They were very cute and incredibly persistent but we managed to avoiding buying anything - a few of us took pictures instead which cost us 2-3 pesos - which is about 50p Bargain!!
Quiet night at the hotel, and had some dinner then went out for a drink to the local tequilla bar. I´ve never seen such huge glasses of tequilla in my life - and it was pretty strong, but when in Mexico..... Anyways we´ve all got another early start tomorrow to head up to San Cristobel in the mountains (which is supposed to be a 4 hour trip around a really windy road - should be a barrel of laughs!!). Night x
