So I check into my hostel which is not far away and is standing perfectly fine and I head to the boys hostel for dinner and drinks. We then hit the town, firstly along the river front which is really beautiful and then to a couple of bars and end up at a club. Which even though it was absolutely boiling it had excellent music and was great for dancing around. It was also full of Cambodian prostitutes, one of which took quite a shine to me! I politely declined and she moved onto the boys. So a big night out and a late night (5am!)
It is no surprise that following the late night that the next day was a late start. We hire a tuk tuk for the day and first stop is the killing fields of the Khmer
Rouge. Today it stands as a memorial and very well put together explaination of the rule of Pol Pot and the slaughter of millions of Cambodians in the 70s. Everyone recieved a head set and you walk through the site where cambodians were brought on truck in the dead of night and brutally murdered then buried in mass graves for reasons such as being educated, wearing glasses or being religious. To say it was good isn't the right word but it was very well done and really respectful.
After the fields we take the tuk tuk back into town and drive to the palace and silver pagoda to find that it is unnecessarily expensive. Group decision...nah! So instead we head to the Russian markets and central markets. I make purchases of Casio watched (from my hatred of ticking clocks) and a stunning Cambodian sapphire. I am told by my jewellery expert (Haw) that even if it's not real it would be an exceptional fake so it's still worth it! Back to the hostels and we have dinner and early night as the next day we are getting the bus to siem reap!
