Emma and Martin's Travels
Hey hope ur all well!
Well we r nearly at the end of our trip in India. Since my last update we have been to Mumbai and Goa and today we r flying back to Delhi again before we depart for Hong Kong tmrw evening.
Our experience in Mumbai was not good! An airport pick-up was supposed to have been arranged for us by the company that booked our trip however after half an hour of scanning the numerous name boards we could find none with our names on it. We had the address of our hotel so decided to get a taxi only for the taxi driver to tell us that the fair would be about 14 pounds, the journey would take us an hr and the hotel was in a red light district - aaaa! We decided this didn't sound so great and got the driver to take us back to the airport which he reluctantly did. So there we were stranded at Mumbai airport at 11pm with nowhere to stay and a million people hassling us to take their taxi or stay at their hotel and they did't seem to understand what NO! means. We looked at a room in one hotel near the aiport which was disgusting - there was a cockroach and everything looked dirty - the guy who owned the hotel was surprised when we said we didn't want to take it "Really u no like?!", "not really" we replyed - we were getting desperate but not that desperate. Anyway we eventually got a hotel to stay at for the night which was ok. The next day there wasn't much point going an hr into the centre of Bombay so we spent most of in cafe's having checked out of our hotel. We flew out the next morning to Goa.
After the disappointment of Mumbai, Goa was really lovely! The beaches were beautiful, the hotel was nice and we didn't get stared at as much as we weren't the only white folk there! The market was also really good and got some good bargains - its amazing how they start off by telling u they'l sell u something for a tenner and when u start walking off they will eventually drop the price to a couple of pounds! Anway the few days in Goa were really good and i think its the one part of India i'd like to return to again.
Just now i am back in Mumbai airport and we have about 5 more hrs to wait untill our connecting flight to Delhi so its gonna b a long day! I've enjoyed my time in India although it has been v different to what i expected. I don't think that before i came i fully realised the extent of the poverty and pollution over here. I have been shocked by how many people there r begging, when we were in Rajastan and our car stopped at traffic lights there was a little girl who looked about 2yrs old standing by herself on an island in the middles of a busy road while her brothers - who were only about 7 or 8 - wandered between the cars begging for money. That was prob one of the most shocking things i've seen! Other than that there have been many other shocking sights such as people riding on the tops of buses to avoid paying, 4 people crammed on a motorbike with one of them holding a baby, and rickshaws overflowing with people - pretty crazy! Its also been strange being in the minority and not even being able to walk up the street without being constantly stared at and bombarded with questions and invitations into peoples shop - its seems like everone that speaks to us here wants some money! We've also had our picture taken a few times with some random Indian people who really wanted photos with us in the hotel lobby or in a temple - that was really strange! I know all this sounds like i've not enjoyed my time here however although its been a bit much at times and so different to home its been an interesting experience. I have to say though i think the only place i will return to in India is Goa!
Anyway better go, we'l try and put some of our photos on the site when we r in Hong Kong or Singapore.
Lots of love
Emma and Martin
