Enjoying our first real sleep in of the holiday today, most of us rose at a leisurely 9am, though Wendy struggled with the fold out bed and didn't sleep much at all. Fingers crossed tonight she'll catch up as well.
Having stocked up on brekky stuff the night before, we grazed on that then headed into town, the plan being to catch a boat along the Costa Brava, followed by a walk of approximately 6km back along it and into Tossa De Mar.
The weather was hot and sunny to begin with, though clouded over a bit by the time we ventured on to the glass bottomed boat around midday. It's fair to say the boat ride was fairly underwhelming, though the boat captain's driving skills guiding us in and out of some caves during the 40 minute journey was impressive. None of the caves really 'floated our boat', nor were there any really interesting things to see through the glass bottom, so we were fairly happy to jump off the boat at Cala Giverola and start our walk back towards town.
The Costa Brava is a mecca for local tourists and they pack the hard, course sandy beaches like sardines, many sitting on deck chairs under umbrellas at great expense. For our family of four on one of the beaches was going to be $40 for an hour just for the privilege. We made do with a simple sarong laid out underneath all four of us, though we were definitely in the minority.
Mind you we probably stood out for several reasons. As always my milky white torso looked completely out of place set amongst the olive skinned Spaniards, whilst Wendy and Courtney were probably the only two females on the beach with their tops on, and no matter how hard I tried convincing Wendy that when in Rome……
Anyway, we enjoyed a swim at one of the beaches along the very picturesque coastline, the water a pleasant temperature to offset the heat of the day, though considerably saltier than anything we are used to, buoyancy not an issue when floating or weeing a little off shore.
We made it back to town by about 4pm, did a spot of shopping then headed to the apartment to freshen up before aiming for an early dinner, hoping that somewhere in town would serve us dinner around 6.30pm. In these parts of the world, dinner doesn't really start until around 9pm, but we were fortunate enough to find a place that still had a noisey Italian family finishing lunch that were happy to take us at 7pm.
We proceeded to enjoy a fairly typical Catalan dinner of croquettes, fried squid, paella and stuffed squid, washed down with a bit of Sangria.
Returning to the apartment by 9pm, Courtney was asleep almost immediately, whilst Mitchell and I watched bits of the repeat of today's stage of the Tour de France, hoping that Richie Porte wouldn't fall off in the replay, while Wendy did some research on our travels for tomorrow.
