Day 14 Fri 9th Nov - Backwaters of Poovar
After breakfast I get itchy feet and ask at reception what we can do today. They suggest a backwater cruise, which I jump at, Russ obliges as he can see my face light up. I think he really just wanted another day lay on the sun bed reading!
So at 930 a Leela car meets us and takes us half hour drive to Poovar, we climb aboard a little motor boat, the driver introduces himself, a young lad who has been touring the backwaters here for 10 years. He takes us along tiny canals and wider ones, stopping as he spots Kingfishers, Eagles, Kites, Egrets and Herons. My face is lit up like a Christmas tree, I just love this and think how my brothers and sis in law would too, as well as my mum! We watch as Kingfishers dive for their catch and back out, their oversized heads and large beaks drying in the sun. The Eagles and Kites before us and high in the sky on the thermals.
He takes us along the wider estuary and a chance to get out onto the golden sands. We do, check out the sea but are more interested in all the eagles and Kites on the sand. We get as close as we can and are mesmerised by them. Back on board it is not long before we are back, Russ jokes and says she wants to do it again, he says come back at 6am you will see many more birds, we laugh, Russ seeing my little face twinkle knows he is in for an early start tomorrow morning!
Back at the hotel, all the staff ask how our trip was, they are so keen to ensure we enjoy our stay here. On the way back we asked our driver to stop so Russ could buy some crisps I take the chance to get into the front as I was feeling rather motion sickness again!
Arriving back, I am quite unstable, Russ holds me and takes me straight to the pool remembering in Zante when everyone was feeling sick that we were all told to get into the water and we would feel better, which we did! So as we had our swim stuff on, we went to the pool and in the water. It did the trick, I felt a lot better, especially when our coffee arrived with some coconut melts.
Rest of the day was cloudy and rained off and on in the afternoon. Around 3 we left for a cuppa back at the room. I decided to pack which we both did, a break at 4 for High Tea then back to the room to chill as the rain still persisted. Around 5 I was blogging , Russ on the balcony and fork lightening caught the corner of my eye. Russ had got his wish, the next hour we watched the rain pelt down with thunder and lightening. Clouds and mist hiding the horizon and then clearing to show us the lights of the fishing boats out in the storm.
The rain stops we go to the main restaurant for food. I still feel a bit sick so stick to Pizza rather than Indian dishes. We retire back to the room I blog, writing this now, yehhh I have caught up at last! Russ reading as he wants to finish his book and start another before our plane journey back home. I give him the chance to cancel the trip tomorrow but he insists on us going knowing that I really want to do it. No idea if we will see anymore birds but like he says, we will probably only ever be here now and not again so why not.
