Hello :)
I am officially at the most northern point in Europe! :) It's foggy, misty and raining... It's not even possible to see the sea from the edge of the cliff! However, to say I've been to the top of Europe makes it worthwhile! :)
Update - Good evening, it's 10:56pm and I've just got into bed. I need to write about the last few days so let's just rewind to yesterday morning. The day of travel after the polar plunge...
We set off from Skibotn early in the morning and took the only road north. The roads were now following the coast and getting gradually worse. The weather was still wet and miserable! On arrival in Olderfjord, where I am now, we again set up camp and sorted our things out in our cabins, i'm still sharing with Chandan, Yaqob and Ray.
It was then time for a bit of shopping in the souvenir shop, I bought some gloves, before the fun started!! Last night it was the second punch party! The first one in Olso was a complete wreck with the Aussies failing miserably to handle their drink... last night though everyone was a wreck!
We started after tea as we played the final round of the Viking Olympics! It was time for some good old races such as egg and spoon, 3 legged, wheelbarrow and sack! I pumped myself up for the egg and spoon! It was very close but Punber One, my team, managed to win the first 3 races before I was up for the egg and spoon. Apparently you have to put the spoon in your mouth these days and use raw eggs!!! I was second for our team in the relay and as Natalie approached my we were second.... I walked fast and eventually got into a run to steal victory just before the line! I was well bloody chuffed!! I have developed a real competitive side on this trip :)
After the games were over the punch flowed nicely and we had a great night! In the blink of an eye the punch was gone, it was 1am but still light, people were everywhere and all were merry! Some of us went to the beach and the rest I don't really remember... Let's just say it was a good night and I woke up this morning feeling right as rain, just about..... ;)
After a fried breakfast we left camp at 11am to head to the North Cape of Europe, or Nordkapp in Norwegian. We took another bus as it's officially the tour day off and it took around 2 hours to get there. The journey was along a single track road and all the time by the sea. We even went through a tunnel under the sea for 6km which l thought was pretty cool! The landscape was barren and small old houses littered the coastline, I can't imagine how they survive in the winter! We stopped to take the odd photo of Reindeers and drove past a number of incidents where cars had hit them, not a pretty sight!
It was around 8 degrees when we arrived at the top of the world and yet again it was raining and cloudy... only this time is it was foggy too! We didn't see a bloody thing or a view all day as it was a complete white out!
We had lunch before spending 5 hours in the visitors centre and taking pictures at the globe monument in the fog... I then had the most northern beer I have ever had and sent a few postcards home. I doubt I'll return to the North Cape of Europe again so before I left I signed the visitors book on behalf of myself and my grandparents. For some reason when I travel I spend the majority of the time thinking about them but I guess it's only a good thing :)
The journey back was another 2 hours and pretty much everyone fell asleep! It was a good day despite the weather and to see on a map where we were was pretty cool!
Tonight we had dinner and most people have chilled or gone to bed. The aftermath of the punch party caught us with us and I enjoyed playing a keyboard piano after enjoying the best piece of chocolate cake I've had for a long time! It was also the most expensive but I decided that as I work hard when I'm at home I could afford I treat myself to a piece of cake when I needed it no matter what the cost :)
I've just had a shower, sorted my clothes out and fingers crossed we should see some warmer weather as we now head south... We have two very long driving days ahead of us as we head through Finland towards Helsinki. Tomorrow though were of to see the man himself, Father Christmas!! The real one! :) I'm hoping that he thinks I've been a good boy this year...... But then again I suppose he can see everything!! ;)
I'm of to sleep now so goodbye from the most northern place I have ever been to :)
