We woke to a less rainy New York - a quick stop off at Starbucks for breakfast and then our airport shuttle picked us up and drove us to JFK.
It was a quick drive out to the airport and then a wait to board our flight to Salt Lake City. It was an uneventful flight however flying US domestic is very poor compared to Australia.
We landed in snowy Salt Lake City and our shuttle drove us up to Park City in less than 45 mins - so easy.
We checked into our condo and then picked up some groceries and settled in. It had started snowing by now and it was great to be back in the mountains.
Day one - we were up early and ready to go. We picked up our skis and tickets and we were in the first line up Crescent lift. It snowed all night so there was powder all round all day. It was a great day skiing. Highlights we're King Con and the double blue Seldom Seen. The kids skied great for their first day back and as we walked back after dropping our skis off at the valet it was a very satisfying experience. Park City is a great mountain. We had a soak in the hot tub as the snow continued to fall - a great first day.
Day two - we decided to ski over to Canyons today. It's a bit of a schlep however on the console over you get to see some amazing mountain lodges. It was a bluebird day today but very cold so we were well rugged up. We skiing some of the glade runs on the west side of Canyons and then the more sunny runs around Saddleback Express. Highlight of the day was another double blue run called Sidewinder (very steep). We had lunch at the Red Pine Lodge and met up with Paul and Andrea and the kids from Sydney. We skied with them for a bit and then began our trek back to Park City. We skied Homerun back to the base, drop off our skis and back to the Condo. I picked up some more groceries (close walk nearby) and cooked dinner fajitas for the kids and a lovely steak for Leigh and I.
Day three - Day three was our restday. We took it easy, had a bit of a sleep in and then caught the courtesy bus into Main Street. We arrived in Main St a little early at 9:30 as most of the stores did not open until 10am. We putzed around at a coffee shop (espresso coffee but they burnt the beans again! - also too hot!). Whilst a pretty street, Main Street in Park City is not as quaint as Main st in Breckenridge and seemed to consist of art galleries and very expensive restaurants! We walked downhill to the Town Lift - very cool that you can ski all the way down to town. We caught the bus back to our condo and had a quiet afternoon and lunch. That evening we went back into town to have dinner with Paul and Andre and the kids at the Collie Sports bar. The Bar/restaurant was a great sports bar - lots of TV's and great BBQ - we shared some pulled pork, ribs and brisket (must try to do brisket at home). It was great to catch up with more time than on the slopes. We caught the bus home and then off to bed watching the NFL finals.
Day Four. Snowboard day! (Urgh). We had promised spencer and Eleanor that they could try out snowboarding on this trip so we rented them the gear and took them out to First time run. Leigh and Campbell skied by themselves for the morning while I stayed with the snowboarders on the green run. After a couple of runs they were getting the hang of if! - I was very impressed given snowboarding is tough first time. Then we had to make it up to Miners Camp for lunch and the rails fell off. The combination of falling over lots of times and the flat light made it tough on the two. After lunch the weather closed in and we decided to make our way home - with me holding on to Eleanor to bring her down. Oh well - at least they tried! Leigh and I went to the grocery store (no booze on Sundays - bloody Mormons!) and we relaxed at the Condo, made dinner and went to bed early (leigh watched the Golden Globes)
Day 5 - unfortubely the rain that started yesterday had continued and the wind had picked up. A lot of the lifts were in wind hold so there was no rush to get out. After the snowboard day, Eleanor and spencer were sore so they decided to have another rest day and I went out skiing by myself. It was great - you had to get high but once you did the snow was great and there was ************e on the mountain. I skied some of the black diamonds off Motherlode (the meadows were great then headed over to Thaynes which was probably the highest open part of the mountain. I found some great runs which I will show the kids tomorrow.
Day six. The snow continued during the night so the conditions were great. There was a delay in getting up the mountain as there was a power outage and many of the lifts weren't operating. We skied Thaynes and Pioneer and then met Mai and Riger for lunch at the mid mountain lodge. After lunch we took the Mcconkeys chair up to the top of the mountain - the kids loved skiing in the trees off the Georgiana double blue run. It was a great afternoon of skiing. That afternoon Eleanor and I had a soak in the Hot tub and then made a snowman named Sunny Nelson.
Day seven - our last day skiing and the mountain had 18 inches of fresh snow.
