Even knowing that Australia had no chance of progressing to the next round, the chance to play Spain, the Number 1 ranked team in the world, was exciting. Spencer and I had a quick breakfast then took his brazuca ball to a local park near the hotel for a bit of pre-game practice. It wasn't long before we'd drawn the attention of some local boys and we have a pick up game. We took turns having shots on goal and dreaming of scoring the winner against Spain. We caught up with Andrew and Clive from Sydney and then walked from the hotel down to Arena da Baxiada (10 min walk). It seemed like all the Spainish had already flown home and there was plenty of Aussie support and the locals were blending with their yellow and green Brazil colours. Being a dead rubber, most of the locals were supporting the underdogs (i.e. Us). Like the Arena da Pantanal in Cuiaba, Curitiba stadium is brand new and was unfortunately the site of many construction workers deaths. The stadium was only officially completed last week and it was clear from the mish-mash of white, grey and dark grey seats that it was a last minute job. Nonetheless, the stadium design is spectacular and the seating angle very steep so we had a fantastic view of all the action. As for the game, Spain were simply a class above our young cubs and without Timmy Cahill, we lacked any potent attack. Spain fielded a full strength side which on its day would clean up most teams - our boys held their own and it was only small defensive mistakes that lead to their goals. After the game we walked back to the hotel for a rest and then watched the Brazil v Cameroon game in the hotel lobby. Like the first game, the entire nation stopped and when Neymar Jnr scored (he scored twice) the place went nuts. They have huge expectations on their shoulders but it would be a strong team that can beat them. Spencer enjoyed his Burger so much from the previous night that we decided that we'd give Madero's another go. The burgers again didn't dissapoint. We were flagging by then so we caught a taxi home (Unlike Australians, Brazilians don't drink during the game but afterwards they make up for it - there were alot of happy Curitiban's in the streets that night!) Back to the hotel and rest - last day in Brazil tomorrow! June 24th Up, breakfast and then back over to the local park for some more football. This time we attracted some much younger locals (2 babies) who decided that Spencer should train them in the art of football. These Neymar Jnr Jnr's will no doubt the playing against the Socceroo's in 2034!. I had agreed with Spencer's teacher that one of his school projects was to be based upon the famous Brazillian architect, Oscar Niemeyer. So in order to gather his research we caught a taxi out to the Oscar Niemeyer Museo on the suburbs of Curitiba. The museum is stunning - very modern and striking in its design. The Museum houses some beautiful modern art and the "Eye" of the museum is an amazing space - it was showing an detailed exhibition of a Sculptor (Johan Turin) who specialised in sculpting lions, birds and other animals. Spencer took lots of photos of the buildings that Niemeyer designed (primarily in Brasillia) and has lots of information for his school project when he gets home Given it was our last day we did a bit shopping for World Cup souvenirs for Eleanor and Campbell and then taxied out to the Airport. A quick flight back to Sao Paolo and we boarded our flight for New York - next day the Big Apple beckons!
