Ha all,
Catching up on my blog again....think I am travelling faster than I can find internet cafes! so little update on my new years eve in Hong Kong.
Spent the day doing 3 city walks which involved getting on and off the excellent underground system and seeing loads of things like the street markets specialising in clothes, dried fruit, medicines, flowers and even goldfish! Such dramatic differences between the old chineese parts fo the city and the new Business District with its huge skyscrapers! Took some noce photos.
After all the walking I was knackered by 5pm, so thought..back to the hotel and a quick relax ans then go out at 10pm to get to the waterfront bars for the firework display etc etc. BIG MISTAKE. I got up at 10pm, I was staying on the 13th floor of the building. Well the lifts wernt working for some reason so I decended by the stairs, as I went down I could hear more and more voices, only to look out at the fifth floor and see what can only be decribed as a sea of people. All the roads had been closed and it was wall to wall chineese in the streets. It took me 2 hours to be able to move all of about half a mile down the road. never made it to the watefront by 12pm midnight, and celebrated new year stood in the street with millions of others...could see the firworks in the distance and the noise of the cheers etc was deafening...they certainly know how to celebrate new year.....and to think I was totally sober as well!
It was then I thought, hey I am not a short arse after all, as I was one of the tallest people in the street!
Funniest little thing of the night was watching the police use the actual traffic lights in the city for crowd disbursement and the HK Chineese being as compiant as always and litterally queing p like cars at the traffic lights when red waiting for them to go green! like that would happen in Europe!
Took almost as long to get back to the hotel and didnt crash till 3pm.
