We are in Anjuan Beach Goa and loving it. We arrived by air on Sat Dec 12th and was picked up by a taxi at the airport which was about 1 hour away from Anjuna. The taxi took us to Pebbles Hotel which is about a 5+ minute walk to the beach and about the same to the Wed Market.
Pebbles was a nice new hotel and it has a flat screen tv. We could have looked around a bit more and found a cheaper place but we liked where we were and stayed. We ended up being in Anjuna from the 12th to the 20th.
Rene & I rented a scooter and drove around to other beaches and towns. The first night that we were there we ended up at a night market about 20 minute drive from Anjuna. I believe that it was the Calangute/Baga night Market. Lots of small huts/venders in the market, food & music. Rene bought a mask for 600 rs of a carved female face. It is pretty cool but don't know if it is some god or not. Not a lot of people at the market and everyone was trying to get you into their small shops. I always found it a bit strange when I would hear an Indian Woman say in an English accent "Sir or madam, please take a look in my shop".
The next few days we road around. Ended up in Calangute the first day and had no idea where we were. Walked around a wee bit and had my first coconut milk and after drinking it my first raw coconut meat. It was quite good. On the way back to Anjuna we got lost and ended up at Baga Beach. I guess we missed a turn. But soon found our way and were back in formiliar territory.
Next we headed north to the beaches there. A lady that told us where we were when we were in Calangute mentioned that we might enjoy the beaches to the north. And she was correct. We spent a day at Morgim beach. Beautiful long sandy beach with very few tourist or anyone on it. This it the beach where a certain turtle lays it's eggs. The day after we went to Ashvem and the day after that we were on Mandrem beach. These beaches were all very long and beautiful and with few tourist. The tourists that were there seemed to be mostly Russian. There were some Brits there too. But we very well could have been the only Canadians there.
Wed we did the Anjuna Market in the morning and after lunch. We stayed quite close to it so we were able to walk back and forth with little effort. Very large market and very few tourists to purchase the goods that were being sold. We had been told by many of the sellers that no one is buying this year and that there are not as many tourist as normal. We could believe it with seeing how it was not busy. Shops of teas, spices, bed covers, pillow cases, carvings, clothing, hanging chairs, shoes, purses, pipes and more.
The market went right down to the beach area and was huge.
We ended up watching a movie at one of the restaurants one night. I am sure that Full Moon (is that was it is called) was a copy. The color was not great and sometimes it seems a bit lighter and then darker but all and all we enjoyed the night.
One day we did spend on Anjuna Beach taking in the sunshine. You could sit at any of the restaurant beds/umbrellas as long as you were buying the odd drink or food from them. Had a nice massage on the beach while Rene walked around and took pictures.
Also had a henna drawing on my left foot by one of the girls that was walking around trying to sell stuff.
We did go to the beach a few nights for dinner and sat and watched the sun go down.
Janis and Johns(?) had a band playing and they were fun to watch as we sat out on the beach at one of the tables. It started around 8 pm since it was to be finshed by 10 pm altho it did go a bit later.
We left on the 20th of Dec out of Mapusa on the express bus to Panjim and then another one from Panjim to Margoa. No one really needs to stay in Margoa unless you are catching the Train the next morning. Not a pretty town.
Forgot to say that we did take a city bus to Old Goa to see the Churches there. It was a nice enjoyable day.
