Thiings to remember when riding on the roof of a bus in the Philippines;-
- Keep your head down, mangoes can hurt you at 60mph
- try and find something to hold onto, preferably a gas cannister
- Hang on for dear life as you round the corners...its only 2 hour ride
- keep an eye on the provisions being delivered to the local villages on route
All good fun, if a little hair raising!
So basically i have the relatively western Boracay and now am heading further off the beaten path into Palawan. Puerto instantly charmed me and i met some awesome people but needs must and some backpacking needs to be done.
So armed with me Julie (from the Czech Rebublic) we board the roof of a bus, heading two hours up the coast to Sabang. Famous for its 8km underground river.
The bus is fun, getting to Sabang in the late afternoon. we get ourselves a lovely little bungalow on the beach after a sweet ride on Caspar the friendly (if not a little lazy) water bufalo that grudgingly takes our luggage up the beach.
Not much to report here, electricity cuts out at 10pm but luckily our intrepid Czech is armed with torches, flasks and food so we get hot chocolate for supper with a little of the green mangos. Ill hold the salt....
Underground river. 45 minute boat ride inside the caves. Brilliant. Our guide makes comparisons of the rock formations to Jesus, mushrooms, cathdrals and all sorts. Its amazing, 20 million years of water eroding the walls of the caves into the most spectacular stalagtites and mites. Oh and loads upon loads of bats. Their sonar bouncing of us as we make our way through in the boat with torches.
Bats, milliond of them. f***ing things.
Jungle trek to the caves was ace, if a little sweaty in the heat.....there were a few of use and we went late to miss the crowds at the caves. Well worth it...
dirty monkeys. Nuff said. Little s***s are vile. Not cute. Great to see they are still surviving but they are worse than ones in a safari park.....so living in the wild sucks too eh??
mangrove swamp was great. little boat ride up the swap, saw a python in the trees and two beautiful Kingfishers....
check out the photos, got some good ones...
