Luckily before bed last night Scott mentioned he may have to get up in the night to see if he could see the lunar eclipse. I suggested he look online and set his alarm otherwise he'll be getting up all night and as a result disturb my beauty sleep - not that I need any! (Scott edit) The BBC news article gave us a time of 12.30am for the total eclipse. Scott waited outside as it was now 11.45pm and it had already started. Camera in hand he disappeared into the night like a man possessed.
After a v disturbed night sleep from Scott's lunar wanderings, I woke as planned for an early morning swim in the campsite pool. Given that I got in as soon as it opened at 8am I had the whole pool to myself, much to my delight. I felt healthy and invigorated afterwards as I cooked Scott his brekkie of bacon sandwich in the morning sunshine. He crawled out from under the sleeping bag to the smell of bacon cooking and a cup of tea. We were on the road by 10.30am, and first drove to the wharf in Robe where we had camped. After a bit of deliberation we just drove round to have a quick look as by then it was v windy and cloudy; and then tried to make some good headway into the 330km drive to Adelaide. There is not much to report of the drive - mostly highway the whole way. We had decided to camp in a suburb of Adelaide on the coast called Glenelg, as it is conveniently only a short drive in the morning to drop the van off. By 4pm we were set up in the campsite ready to walk along the coastal path for 3.5km to reach the bars and restaurants of Glenelg wharf - the closest Adelaide gets to LA apparently! The sun had come out in time for our walk which was a relief as the day had been cloudy and v windy until then - this is reportedly Australia's coldest summer ever! It's normally 40 odd degrees here now.
On reaching the wharf we enjoyed meandering round and people watching. We had the obligatory sunday afternoon cocktail at one of the beachside bars (which set us back £20!). This place is v pricey and swanky and upmarket with loads of uber cool apartment blocks. It was near 7pm when we got back to the van and had dinner before Scott skyped his friend Nathan. I tried to get hold of my family but as usual noone had skype on! Tomorrow we are meeting my friend Eleanor who has emigrated out here to Adelaide only 5-6 months ago so I'm really excited to see her, and we'll enjoy a few nights staying with her before flying to Brisbane on the East coast.
